    Arrow lost slaves

Ok I need some help. I've got a computer here that has lost it slave devices ( a dvd cd-rom and a 250 zip drive). It's an asus p5a motherboard with a 13 gig master on primary and dvd slave on primary and 20 gig master on secondary and 250 zip slave on secondary. All of a suden it lost the dvd and zip. I've tried re-setting the bios, virus scanned with 2 different virus scans, new ribbion cables and a new motherboard, still no slaves. They are seen when the computer boots up. Any ideas without haveing to wipe everything out?

    Question

    >..they are seen on boot..<
So the BIOS sees them and Winhell doesn't?

Correct, cmos will see both devices on boot, but windows 98 will not pick them up, even with cd-rom drivers loading in dos.

What does Device Mangler say about them? Also, does this machine have TweakUI on it?

The device manager doesn't list them at all. And the computer does not have tweakUI on it. The only things that run on startup is mcafee virus scan, and the soundblaster live software.

    Cool

One thing that will cause your slaves not to show up is your IDE bus controller. I've had the same problem, especially on the ASUS Athlon mobos with the VIA chipsets. If you copy a drive to use with a VIA chipset mobo, occasionally the bus controller does not get set up correctly and it will cause the exact problem your talking about. I tried removing the existing bus controllers and replacing them to no avail. The only way I was able to get around the problem was to reformat and reinstall Windows manually. I hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for your replies. WildTech gave me a great idea with his message. What I did is went up to asus's web site and downloaded the latest bus mastering drivers, and loaded them. Everything seems to be working great now. Bot cd and zip drive have come back and haveing no problems accessing them. Thanks everyone for your help.
