I consider it a "toy" operating system. It's easy to work with, has a nice user interface, but there's really not a whole lot going on. I wasn't impressed.

Although I've heard from a few people that it has some awesome A/V capabilities, it wasn't on my system long enough to test it out.

If anybody wants to try BeOS, you can download the free Personal Edition here. It's about a 45MB download and it launches from within Windows. The limitation of the personal edition is that the volume size is limited to 500MB.

Cobra's got it right, pretty much a toy right now with no big name developers to back it up.

    Question

A couple of real dumb question concerning BEOS.

What apps are available for BEOS?

Can it run most windows apps?

If not, is there an emmulator available?

Think this pretty much covers the dumb question spectrum. hehe

The best place for software is http://www.bebits.com/

I played with it quite a bit right after the free version came out. Even got it to boot on it's on without windows. But after about 2 weeks it got boring - the posts above are right, it's more or less a toy.

I have to agree its got alot of room to grow .. right now its a toy OS .. maybe in the future they will add more and continue the roll .. but its not for amin stream work .. but if you want something different and want to get a new feel head this way for a side project

I've d/l the freebie version and it works great. We have a cam-corder tech here that uses it for video editing, and he absolutley loves it. The only problem is the limmited amount of support for drivers and apps. There is a version that will run with windows.I have installed it on my system as a secondary op/sys. It makes a boot disk that you just insert to boot up into BeOs, and it doesnt take up too much space on the hard drive. The only part I had trouble with was (the free version) didnt have the drivers for my modem. Other than that every thing else was fine.

Another nice thing about BEOS is read access to NTFS drives ... saves me having to throw NT on a spare drive for data recovery.

    Thumbs up

Tried it for a while. It'd be a great OS, and a real challenge to Microsoft, if only it were better supported. Unfortunately, it's got even less support than Linux.

Had a go at it a little while ago, didn't seem too impressed by it - Linux had better support in comparision, and more functionality too.

If it develops a bit more, I'll probably revisit it, but for the time being, no go.
