Buffer underrun?!?
When I burn CD-R w/SONY CRX160E, about ten sec. into test phase I get buffer underrun. My mobo suports UDMA 66/100. My drive config is: HDD primary slave, CD-ROM primary master;CD-RW secondary master. HDD is Western Dig. 30 GB Caviar. I looked in BIOS there wasn't anywhere to set up bus speed, how do I find the bottleneck?
p.s. No screensavers or other apps. running in background (WIN 98)

Try to burn a CD at half the speed your burning now.
An obstacle is something you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

Just because a drive is sold as 10X or 12X doesn't mean it will burn at that speed. Memory, cpu speed and software play major factors.I have a system that has all the goodies and have NEVER been able to burn wide open. I did have a SCSI burner that did though..........12X.....
Also make sure of DMA and wether it is capable.....
Roxio 5. and NURO are the best software I have used!

Often if applies to the media source as well. I have a SONY 140 which will burn at it's max speed of 8x on some cdrs and some as slow as 4x. What software are you using? The sony stuff is just so so. Try Nero or NTI software, there are excellent demos for both on tucows.com!

Another thing to look for are any app/programs (Ie. Real Player, System Doctor, Etc.) that you have loading at startup and running in the background. These will certainly limit the speed at which you can successfully burn.

Clear out temp files and defrag before a burn session too ...helped a lot when I got my first burner in the dim and distant past.
I think I know just enough to know how much I don't know... I think...

I have an Acer 4x2x32 CD-RW and use the Adaptec software that came with it. The thing that eliminated burning coasters for me was updating the firmware on the drive and running the update patches from Adaptec.
Maybe Sony has a firmware update for your burner.
When all else fails.....FDISK!
