Thumbs down Windows keeps finding printer after driver installed

First and fore most- I HATE HP PRINTERS (INKJETS)

I have never had more problems with HP printers than with any other printer.

After installing the printer drivers for an HP 890C, I reboot. Windows says found new hardware. Manually specified the location of the driver. Reboot, same thing!

So, I thought may be it is because I didn't run the setup executable from the CD. So I did that. No go.

I even went into BIOS and change Plug n Play OS to NO.

    No change.

    Here is the system config.

    Win98SE
    P3 800
    256 MB PC133
    ABIT VA6
    Creative Live Value
    32MB S3
    Plextor 8/4/32
    Toshiba DVD 12X
    Floppy
    250MB Zip (IDE)
    30G HDD
    300W Power SUpply
    Creative Modem Blaster
    Logitech Trackball mouse
    Microsoft Kbd

anything else that I am forgetting? Spent three hours at the customers trying to figure this issue out.

Note: Norton was not installed. No antivirus was running at the time.

Next time it boots, let it find the printer and go about the steps of finding a driver for it.
This time uncheck all drives and any paths to the location of the driver and keep on clicking NEXT and FINISHED, and it will not bother you the next time you reboot.

I have had the same situation!!! First make sure in the BIOS the printer port is set as ECP and not EPP or Bidirectional. If you have the printer in a switch I recommend you to install it directly to the PC. Then boot to Windows and cancel the new printer hardware install at bootup. If you don't have the latest drivers from HP's site I advise you to get them. Then run the downloaded setup file and choose the "Remove HP Deskjet 890C Series Software" option and follow the instructions to remove any traces of the drivers. Then restart the PC and at bootup it will show the new hardware install and browse to the area of the new drivers and let Windows install them. Hopefully it will never bother you again. It worked for me and I hope it work for you!!!

The part where I don't specify a location and let it go as an unknown device, I tried that but I got the same result.

Onething did catch my attention- switching the parallel port to ECP.

Will check that.... hopefully that's the end. Usually I change the parallen port to ECP when i boot up the mbd the very first time, but I don't recall doing it on this one.

I will check and if it does help, report back

Thanks for all your help guys! *sob* you have been life savers quite a few times- I hope I can help someone like you guys do.

P.S. In the meantime if any of you has any more suggestions or comments, please do post them!
