Post Getting beat to death on this one

I'm getting this error while trying to load windows 98se.

w98setup caused segment load failure in module SETUPX.dll

Than when I quit I get this error.

Standard Mode: Invalid dpmi return from 0727:01B2

I disabled my cache (read it somewhere else)Still doesn't matter.

Before this I was getting a SUWIN error.

This is beating the crap out of me please help.

    Thanks

    Chris

The last link isn't the exact error you get but it does hint towards bad ram. Try using known good memory or if you have additional new ram try removing it.

    1. Docmem - check your RAM
    <a href="Http://www.simmtester.com" target="_blank">Http://www.simmtester.com</a>

    2. check your BIOS for RAM timings - they might be too aggressive

    3. check your FSB settings - you maybe running the wrong FSB speed.

    4. check your BIOS settings in general - try to use the "setup defaults" or "optimize defaults" and see if it happens..

    5. use a clean win98 Floppy and fdisk the mbr again (fdisk /mbr)
you might have a boot sector virus.

I've seen cases where it was also bad PSU, bad Display adapter and bad NIC -
so better take all the hardware out leaveing only needed hardware for setup and see if it happens .

also I'd try to run the setup directly from the HDD (copy the setup files to a c:\win9x and install from there)

    hope it helps

The CDROM drives ran fine after installing windows but they have stopped installation even if setup was being done from HDD.

    RAM is my bet too.

    But, where did you get that setupx.dll ? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Thanks everyone. FYI, it was the RAM. I replaced it with a 128 MB stick of pc-100. It installed but at a surprisingly slow rate. (2 hours) Windows at the beginning of the setup stated it would take that long too. I never seen such a long install before. But after the install everything seems to be OK. I can only get to work on this machine for about 5 minutes a day. So that last statement may be wrong. But I think it's ok.

    Here's the machine specs.

    Asus A7V133 Board
    AMD T-bird 900
    20 GB HDD (Maxtor 7200)
    Abit Siluro (geforce2mx 32MB)
    256 MB pc-133 RAM
    Inwin case and power supply
    98se installed (finally)
52x Pine CD Rom (very noisy) still don't think this is the problem.

    Tests:
Maxtor powerdrive - to test the HDD (got some errors) that was when I was using the BAD ram.

I ran some generic RAM test mentioned in this post and it claimed the RAM was good. Not sure how credible the test was.

I did a multitude of hardware swaps and removals. Nothing helped.

Thanks to all. How about how long that install took......any thoughts?

Have you tried a different CD? I have had similar problems with damaged CDs

I've also seen extremely slow installs when level 2 cache is disabled.

    Did you re-enable cache?

It's hella slow without cache memory. Re-enable it and see what that does.

Probably a BIOS setting. Go into the BIOS and look for it and turn it on.

Also - try setting your board to the optimal settings or the best performance settings in bios. When I set my kt7a - raid to failsafe it dogs but on performance settings it's the bomb (though it gets a little buggy).
