Red face HP Deskjet and XP Pro CPU Usage

I was wondering if anyone here might know why my P4 1.8 GHz Computer is using 100 percent of the cpu every time I print something, Ive searched HP's site with no luck, the only drivers available for this printer are the ones that come with XP Pro.

    My system specs are:
    P4 1.8 GHz
    MSI Motherboard
    128 mb RDRAM PC800
    40 Gig 7200 rpm HD
    Geforce 2 MX 200
    Diamond Supra 56k Modem
    Sound Blaster Live 5.1
    Sony 16x10x32 CDRW
    52x Cdrom drive
    Zip 100
    300 Watt PS
830C Deskjet HP Printer (hooked up via parralel)
    WinXP Profesional

To find out for sure, use task manager/performance tab for the basic idea.

Also, there is perfmon.exe. I am pretty sure that XP has the performance monitor. go to start/run, type in perfmon (the full path is %systemroot%\system32\perfmon.exe), and you can establish several counters for anything from memory page faults, to cpu utilization, to system interrupts.

Damn, I just noticed that you asked "why" the CPU is at 100%. Sorry, I thought you asked to know "if" it was at 100%. My mistake.

Sorry, I can't help you to much there...

I take it you've already been to HP's site to check out <a href="http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpdeskjet811052&LC=printers&Tfile=b pd09005" target="_blank">Microsoft (R) Windows XP Installation Instructions</a>. I understand that you shouldn't be having that problem using parallel but have you tried using the USB interface? With a system like yours, you might have better luck going that route. Also, what program are you using to print from? Make sure that it is trying to print out to the DeskJet and not some other printer.

Just a couple of ideas...let us know how it goes.

Yeah ive checked out hp's xp install, and it doesnt matter what program I print from (guess I should have specified) it uses all the cpu, from word to photodeluxe. I guess I will try the usb route and see what happens, thanks Donj.
