top three reasons for crashes
I was just wondering what peoples top three reasons for computer crashes. Here is my list, what do you think?
1. Hardware failure/conflicts
2. Low Memory
3. Damaged OS (BAD Windows)

My list (including lock-ups)
1. Heat
2. Shoddy software (drivers included)
3. Hardware conflicts (I detest plug-and pray)

1) 27,000 shareware programs have been downloaded and installed - 19 of these load in the background at startup.
2) Cheap/faulty hardware (the mainboard is PCChips, Amptron ect...)
3) Heat

1) The 36 files they're running in the background from internet downloads.
2) Bad hardware.
3) Bad drivers/device settings.

2. Windows 95
3. Any service packs or upgrades to number 1 and 2

1. Users
2. Program conflicts (cheaply designed software)(includes bugs in programs)
3. heat related
4. buggy drivers (falls into 2.)
5. cheap hardware/ flaky components
6. first generation pentium math co processor bug
7. chipset flaws
8. memory
9. mobo related (other than listed above)
10. hard drive read/write errors
11. EMF related
12. carelessness when isntalling components resulting in ESD (yes it really is this rare)

there are a number of reasons:
1. Norton anything, except Anti-Virus, that seems to work ok!
2. Users...that use Norton and think it makes them some kind of computer guru!
3. Users...that try and take off Norton when they realise that number 2 does not apply to them.

Good post: I agree with a lot of what I read. Here is my list:
1. Users.
2. Installing and unistalling tons of crappy little programs, and leaving half of them run in the background. (thanks to those that pointed that out)
3. Bad hardware configurations. Just because Windows98 says on the box that it will run on next to nothing, does not mean it should. The Pentium75 running 16MB of ram on a 850MB Hdd is not an ideal machine. Then throw in my number 2 reason on top of all of it and you are asking for trouble.

1. Aureate/Radiate stealth internet monitoring/advertising crap.
2. Crap hardware(I've seen crap from the best companies to the worst).
3. Software(drivers and programs running in the background).
