If command.com *IS* copyrighted, will future releases of the "format /s" command now route you to an EULA?

I wish I could turn down the intelligence level of some clients' computers. There's a button on the monitor marked brightness, but it doesn't quite have the desired effect

The answer to this is simple....
If the end user OWNS a legal copy of WinXXX, then the 1 license he/she has is reto active to the previous versions of Dos/Win.
M$, no longer sells licenses for win95, they tell you on the phone you must buy a WinME license, but it is still legal to install win95. (once per license)
So.... now you have the license that came with win95 and the winME one you bought. You can install Win95 on 2 computers.
--------------------------------------------
The Catch....
When installing WinXXX it will RETAIN the copy of the old command.com. (the extra option in the F8 menu- Boot to previous ver of dos)This is what causes the problem....
Now they have 2 M$ O/S's installed using the SAME license.
They need to boot, format c:/q, then copy the win9x dir to c:\ (as older versions of Win will "loose" the CD-Rom, after 1st reboot) and install it from the HD.
--------------------------------------------
So... What I did was create a custom WinXXX install disk. that asks them to insert there winXXX cd and then does all the necessary steps to corectly install windows, while removing the old dos.

You'll be saying that until the first time you are busted for software piracy. Then you'll think twice!

If you're just putting command.com on there so that they can type setup for winXXX at a DOS prompt, why not just set the system to boot the CD first? Win98 and later CDs are bootable and will start setup immediately.
Just my $.02

I hope they lose as well, it sucks.
By the way, there is actually a store around here you can buy DOS and Win 3.1, still shrinkwrapped. Any buyers?

command.com is dead anyway. Everything is going NTFS. And I'm sure whatever the kernal there is going to have the same issues.

Good point. Although, there are some people that still want to run Win 95B. It is finally somewhat stable.

Yeck! Microsquat is getting on my nerves. Just load Linux and get it over with. Either that or set the BIOS to boot from CD and sell the customer a copy of the latest OS possible. Third option is to sell the CD and also install/configure it for the customer.

Man do I get lost in all this legal mumbo jumbo. It seems to me that if a user has any bonifide copy of Win9xxx then you can load sys files on their machine. Now I am not going to try and verify if their copy is legal unless Gates and Co. want to shove a few coins my way. I guess what we do may be considered illegal as we just provide them with a start up disk or if the PC is capable we set it to boot from CD. And with the thousands of shops around the world can you imagine the cost involved in monitoing to see who is leaving Command.Com on users HD? Me thinks Gates and Co. are getting a little too upity and greedy.

Microsoft are a bunch of vampires...sticking their fangs into the neck of the world. You'll never see someone selling Bill Gates Toenail clippings on eBay, as those are most likely copyrighted too. It's stuff like that which makes me wish I worked in a Mac, UNIX or LINUX envrionment. Viva la Open Source Resistance!
