Adept, what mainboard are you using with this PII 350???
Also, could the cpu be the bottleneck in those random hiccups???
If you have a PIII kicking around and your board can handle, try that, see if it solves that.
Maybe it is memory cas settings in the bios???
Anythings possible at this point.

I know this seems stupid, I've just suffered from similar problems with XP 1900 and GF3 Ti 500, graphics jerk at regular intervals during game play at all resolutions and in all games. My problem was caused by slightly faulty CD ROM drive (seemed to be working), I've swapped it out and all is now fine. (I wish I'd realised before I did wipe and reinstall, what a waste of 3+ hours )

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I have tried all the CAS settings available (when they were available/functional) without resolving this issue.
The board is an Asus P2B (440BX AGPset). The CD-ROM drive is an LG 52x, alone on the onboard secondary IDE controller.
Q, this occurs even without a CD in the drive - was that your case too?
Goku, I've successfully installed WinXP on machines as low as a 233MHz laptop. As long as you have gobs of RAM, WinXP runs stable and at a good pace. I've also removed the themes now.

Yes, it even occurred while drive was empty. Drive seemed to be functioning otherwise. Even used it for reinstall before I realised it could be causing problem.
The settings of GF2 MX. Do you have the fog table off and quality set to blend? Do you have anti aliasing set to off? I played with the settings and 3dmark 2001 for ages trying to find the best solutions for graphics.

Flabooble!
Hey - I'm all about that CPU not being able to handle those games! I tried Q3 on a P2 450 with a 32mb Rage Fury card and it dogged (no ata either). I went and put the same card in a 1.2ghz machine and it flew.
I have the same issue with playing media player movies that are quite large (like a 640mb rip of a CD). It never happened with older media player versions but now that I have XP and MP8, of yeah, it's friggin slow. Try it on a box with a faster processor.

OK, here's the status:
Fog table OFF
Mipmapping at BLEND
Antialiasing OFF
As for a faster CPU, I'll try a 533 and OC it 'til I'm happy later on this week.
I'll let you know if anything comes out of these suggestions.
Thanks to all - I really appreciate this!

Maybe I'm a simpleton, but have you tried a different monitor ? Preferrably from a different manufacturer.

Have you tried disabling disk indexing to see if the random hits to your hard drive are overloading your processor?

Also, have you tried setting the reolution in the games to 800x600 or lower?

Why hasn't anyone suggested upgrading/reloading Direct X?
Just a thought...

I would try running the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. See if that dredges anything up.
Good luck!
When in doubt, blame the sales department!

Using a faster CPU on that board (Asus P2B 440BX) would be next to impossible. The 350 was OCed to 466, but I've pulled it back down to its normal settings until I find out what's happening.
I've tried a Celeron 700 with a slotket adapter and it would not recognize it. I'll be trying the 533 MHz this week, but even that may be a bit tricky. I wonder if I should try that trick I read about OCing the FSB to 133...
I'm planning on upgrading CPU/MB/RAM/3D card, but my financial priorities are elsewhere right now.
I'll also try diagnosing / reinstalling DirectX to see if anything comes of it.
BTW, Sandra Pro's video test shows the frames per second to be slowing down at about exactly the same pace I've noticed the pauses happening.

I have seen this problem when using IDE cables longer than 18", Especially when playing back DVD's.
