    Question "Hiccup" while using some video features

    OK, try to follow me if you can. I originally noticed this problem while trying to frag MacGyver in Q3.

    I'm using a PII 350 OCed to 466MHz, 768Mb RAM and a GeForce 2 MX400 (64Mb). Vid is set at 1280 (19" screen).

    While using video playback (AVI, MPEG, etc.), the display will "hiccup" or sputter, if you will, once about every second. This also happens in games (Q3, Half-Life, Deux Ex, etc.) with the same regularity.

    This problem occurs regardless of whether or not I've connected my ADSL modem to the 'net.

    My question is "What should I be looking for as a possible source of this problem?"

    I can't confirm officially (not at home right now), but as far as I know: yes.

    You know of similar issues linked to DMA settings/problems?

    I've seen sputtering effects when DMA was off

    i don't even have my rez set that high with my mx400. I usually use 1024, and I have a xp1600+ with 512ddr... framerates are way better at 800, but everything is just too big and blocky.

    Aside from the fact that WinXP should enable DMA mode automatically, here is what the Device Manager shows:

    Furthermore, I've reduced my CPU clock speed back to its 350MHz original and have activated my AGP port's speed to be 100% of FSB frequency (100MHz).

    I've also reduced my resolution to 1024x768 @ 85Hz.

    DRAM timings have bee reset to "auto".

    Guess what - it's still doing it.

    Ah crap - how could I miss this?

    I'm using a Promise Ultra100 TX2, so the onboard IDE controllers are only being used for one lonely CD-ROM drive right now.

    My bad.

    Meanwhile, I've updated my GeForce drivers with the latest Detonators.

    In a last ditch effort, I've reset the chipset settings back to their original status, modifying only the LPT port.

    You guessed it - no change.

    That's it - I'm giving up...

    I've tweaked WinXP as much as I could, disabled the overclocking I'd been using, optimized my swap file, disabled all the services I could, etc.

    ...and it's still doing it! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

    I hate not knowing the reasons behind this "pause" in my games and movies.

    Time for a well-deserved nervous breakdown now.
