setting default home page
I have a window 2000 system with a local security policy which doesnt let people do anything but surf the net. Somehow someone changed the default homepage. I don't know how they did it because it is pretty secure. I tried the link at the bottom of www.searchnow.ws and it didnt work. It just refreshed the page.
真真does anyone know how to set a page to be the default automatically when the pages load????...I want to see if there is a loophole past my security settings. I know there must be a ton of jscript and other code that can do this.
Thanks

Is this computer a stand alone or part of a domain? Is it professional or Server? When you say that you have local policy set to only surf the net, what exactly do you have configured in your local security policy (especially pertaining to internet explorer). Do you have this set in Local security Policy, or in MMC, Group Policy Snap-in?

This computer is Win 2k pro. part of 2k domain. it is a global group policy (mmc). I don't know what web page exactly bypassed the security and was set because it was at a different location. I am still waiting on that info from that location. I am thinking that the policy for those computers is somehow different than the others.
Thanks

does this PC have a local version of IE installed that it is running versus the network version. If they are running IE on a network PC, but with IE not looking at teh network, then this is possible

Do you run a logon script?
I have users constantly changing their homepage so I did a regedit /s from the logon script to import a *.reg to change the homepage to the Intranet site.
PM me if you want me to forward you the files.

If one particular domain has more lax group policy set, you should create an *.adm file with only the policy for Internet explorer set (and whatever else you may want to add) and apply it to the GPO for the domain, specify "No Override", and give only the domain where you're having trouble the permission to apply that adm file. (or, since you want this home page to apply to the entire domain regardless of what any child domains might have set, just give everyone apply permissions.)

I might be waaay off here, but the way I interpret this is that your default gateway was changed, rather than the homepage. If you click a link and the page only refreshes no matter what you click, it seems that's not caused by the homepage.

No, he means that when he clicks on the link for "Make us your homepage" or whatever, the page just refreshes, it doesn't become the new homepage. Not that every link he clicks on just refreshes the page. And if the default gateway did change, you would get a file not found error or something along those lines (actually if the new gateway functions correctly, you wouldn't notice anything out of the ordinary.)
