I know this may sound silly, but try swapping the chips in the banks, just to make sure both sets of chips are good or both banks are good and there are no missing or bronken connectors.

I am not sure about Packard Hells, but I know with certain manufactures like Dell, you need to check out their web site because not all RAM chips are compatible.

I found out about that when I tried to add a 64mb stick...

First boot of the day you have to press ESC during the memory test or it would only detect 37mb

Mind you, that's just Packard Hell for you...

Just a thought, are the modules you are using different physically? Like as in one is single sided and the other double? I have seen some machines ( including some Packard Bells ) that only detect single sided memory, so if you used double sided it only saw half of it.......

    Just an idea....

Agreed, I have two old boxes in my tech room and both will only see 64Mb and 128Mb sticks as 32Mb's.

Try to see if Pakard Bell has speicifc ram for that model, some times these companies decide to use proprietary modules to jack up sales.

Yeah, but you better try Packard Bell Europe because PB USA was killed by NEC a couple of years ago

The Intel® Advanced/RH motherboard provides six 72-pin SIMM sites for memory expansion. The sockets support 512 KB x 32 (2MB double sided SIMMs only), 1M x 32 (4 MB), 2M x 32 (8 MB), 4M x 32 (16 MB), and 8M x 32 (32 MB) single-sided or double-sided SIMM modules. Minimum memory size is 8 MB and maximum memory size, using six 32 MB SIMM modules, is 192 MB. Memory timing requires 70 ns fast page devices or, for optimum performance, 60 ns EDO DRAM. 36-bit SIMM modules may be used for parity or ECC generation and checking.

I've come across a lot of PB's that required you to change jumper settings to allow use of a larger memory config. Also some of the PB motherboards had on-board memory that had to be disabled before use of installable memory chips over a certain size. If the manual is available to read check it out.
