Unhappy Another HP problem

Recently I installed a second HD in a HP pavalion, Formated the new HD and sent it out the door. New HD was IDE1 slave. Customer calls from far away mad as Hell. His CDRom was not being seen by the system. He took it to a tech close to him and they had to remove the new HD.They called HP and was told the system could only see 2 Drives because of some propritary configuration. HP said if they would send the PC to them they could make the changes so it would see 4 drives and that the change could only be made by HP. Has anyone ran into this and is there a fix other than sending to HP. Seems kind of dumb to have 2 IDE channels limited to one drive each

Which pavilion was it, do you know? I have seen quite a few lately and not had any problems running more than one drive per channel. However I have seen on some models that the computer is set up as cable select. If I understand cable select correctly, if the cables are cable select than the drives have to be set that way or they just get confused. I don't know if this helps at all though.....

Are the devices seen properly in the BIOS?

To access the BIOS, at the HP Blue Screen, press F1 to enter Setup. Follow the legend on how to scroll through the options.

You might also make sure that you have the latest BIOS updates installed.

Go here for HP's Drivers & Downloads.

HP and Compaq put all their crap on cable select. Set as master and slave and you should be fine.

A feature of some PCs that allows the hard disks to be numerically identified by the order in which they are attached by the cable. Both the BIOS and the IDE drive must support Cable Select. Without Cable Select, jumpers on the IDE drive must be set to Master or Slave designations.

"HP said if they would send the PC to them they could make the changes so it would see 4 drives and that the change could only be made by HP." This has been tried on cable select and as master/slave. I remember having one other HP in the past thta only allowed one device per channel and was told the same thing by HP. The unit has not came back to the shop yet so I cant give all the particulars. I am not sure but I think it was a 6000 series no more than 2 years old. Will try to upgrade bios when it comes in Thanks.
