    Post Adobe Photoshop 6

Hello All. I installed photoshop 6 on my computer. Now, I can't view the thumbnails in explorer like I used to be able to do before. I know that it was with what files were associated with different applications. It was in the setup of photoshop. Anyways, does anyone know how to fix or associate the picture files back to just plain old IE or Image Preview. Thanks in advance.

Anybody else got any ideas. I still can't see the thumbnails. No picture, just the icon it is to be opened up with. Any help is greatly appreciated. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

    Yes,

Just copy the following into a .reg file (between the -=-=s) and merge it, it will fix your problem.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg]
    @="jpegfile"
    "Content Type"="image/jpeg"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\jpegfile]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\jpegfile\ShellNew]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\PersistentHandler]
    @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

What happened is that another application associated itself with the jpg extention and removed the ShellEx part of the key. (That where explorer knows to open a preview of it.)

Oh, I did this for Windows 2000 SP2.

If for some reason, this looks funny, you can test to see if you have the keys already, by renaming the file to .jpe or .jpeg and seeing if it shows up in explorer. If it DOES, then open regedit (very carefully <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">) and goto the HKey_Classes_Root key. Look at the .jpe extension (or whatever works for you) and copy the shellex key to the .jpg key. That should fix it up for ya, and you will also have learned how to fix it.

The HKey_Classes_Root Key is where windows figures out what application to open a specific file extension with.

You could do the above or you could just right click on the folder that has the pictures and select properties. Check off enable thumbnail view and boom, there you go.

If you have image preview as an option for looking at the pipcs I take it you're running Windows ME? Try right clicking the picture and choosing Open With and then select, oh heck, Other I think and associate it with Image Viewer.

If you don't have ME then click a picture one time to highlight it, hold Shift and then right click for the Open With option to come up.

Thanks Shadowking but could you explain with a little more detail what it means to copy and merge into the .reg file (between the -=-=s). Also, what the @= means. Sorry, if I couldn't understand it. I really appreciate your help. Thanks. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

If I understand him correctly (Please verify , Willy). The problem he is having is that when he selects a file in Windows Exploder, the little thumb on the left side does not show up.

Well Shadow. I am having this problem in WinMe and when I open up My Pictures in Windows Explorer. The picture will not display. Just the blue E shows up for each picture. Before the installation of Photo 6, I could see the actual thumbnail of the picture. Now, like I said before. The pic no longer displays.
I think it some simple setting that I could set but for thelife of me, I can not figure it out. I really am appreciative of your help and time. Thanks, Willy

Sure. I am assuming that you are new to the registry, so I am going to start there. If I start too low, please don't feel that I am talking down to you, I just want to cover the bases, and it will benefit other readers as well.

Here is the official Microsoft Documentation on Windows 2000 (including the registry). It is very well written, and highly recommended.

The registry is the database that Windows and the software you have installed stores all of its configuration information in. You can access the registry directly by typing "regedit" in the run box. However, DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS:

<STRONG>WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Nobody (Including Microsoft) cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.</STRONG>

OK, enough of that out of the way. The registry is made up of Hives, these hives pertain to different categories of information that is stored in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER is the key that is unique to each user that logs on to the machine. If some software wants to store User-Specific settings, then this is the key that it stores that information in.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is similar to the HKCU key, except that is is MACHINE specific, instead of User specific. So if some software wants to store system wide settings, this is the spot.

HKEY_USERS is where each user's settings are held.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG is where most of your hardware settings are. This is where the Plug-n-Play ID's for your hardware is stored, and your TCP-IP parameters, etc.

Finally, what you are most interested in for this question: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. This is where Windows stores all of its file association information. Ever wondered why when you right click on a .txt file, there is a "Print" option and it automatically opens in Notepad and prints? How does Windows know to do this? Lets find out. (BTW I am using Windows 2000 for all of these examples, so if you are using a less robust OS <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">, you may have to adapt a little...)

First, we are going to do this with the "Appropriate" method (NOT using regedit.) Then we will look at what really happens.

Open Windows Explorer and click "Tools --> Options". Click the "File Types" tab. Press "txt" to find the txt file information. Click the "Advanced" button to see what options there are, and what they do.

You can see an Open, Print and Printto command. You can click edit on open to see that open really just runs notepad with the filename as the argument. (%1 means the file's name.)

So lets look at this from Regedit's point of view. Run Regedit.exe, and then read the Warning above. We are doing Brain Surgery on your computer, and any changes you make will be updated in real-time, without checking to make sure you are doing the right thing. Click the + next to HKCR. Now press ".txt" quickly and it should take you all the way down to the .txt key. Lets look around. Hmmmm. Where is all the "Open" and "Print" information? This isn't helpful at all! I still don't know that it opens with notepad!!! You're right. Windows 2000 has implemented a new way of handling file types that is different from the older OSes. It is possible to have an extension that is of a certain "Type". For example: .jpg, .jpeg, and .jpe are really all the same file types, but have different extensions. Wouldn't it be nice if we could change ALL of their behavior with just one setting? Now we can.

Notice under the root key of .txt the default key (which is stored as "@") is txtfile. Lets look to see how that is handled. Go back to HKCR and press "txtfi" quickly to get to the txtfile key. (Notice no "." before the keyname). Now lets explore that keyspace to see what options we have. Notice the "shell" key and under that we have the old familiar "open", "print", and "printto" keys. Here is where Windows saves the information on how to open the file. So lets look at another one.

Go back to HKCR and type "jpe" to take you to the "jpegfile" key. Here is where the jpg settings are stored. Feel free to muck around.

I also recommend looking at some other keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup

    Have fun and be careful.

Shadowking. Thank you very much for your information and time. It really helped me into better understanding the registry. I already had some knowledge in the field but you post made it make a lot more sense. However, I now have an image viewer on the bottom left part of my explorer but the pictures are still coming up as what it is to opened with. Do I have to change anyother key other that the .jpeg and .jpe? Thanks for you help.

    Try looking at [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile]

I posted the contents of mine above...

To associate all of the picture files you will need to do the following to all of the different kinds of pictures (.bmp, .jpg, .gif, etc.).

Right click a picture, a .jpg for instance.
Choose OPEN WITH and click CHOOSE PROGRAM.
Click on the viewer in the box that pops up.
Check off ALLWAYS USE THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN THESE FILES.
    Click OK.

There, now the file is associated with whatever you to open it all the time.

To get back the image preview do the following.

Open the folder that you want to enable the image preview in.
Click on VIEW up at the top.
Click on CUSTOMIZE THIS FOLDER and a wizard will pop up.
    Click NEXT.
Put a dot next to CUSTOMIZE and a check next to CHOOSE OR EDIT AN HTML TEMPLATE FOR THIS FOLDER.
    Click NEXT.
Click on IMAGE PREVIEW from the list of options.
    Click NEXT.
    Click FINISH.

Now when you click the pic one time a preview opens up the pic in a quick viewer to the left.

If you want thumbnails to appear on the pics themselves.

Go to the folder that you want to see thumbnails in.
    Click VIEW.
    Click THUMBNAILS.
    Ta-Da

    Good luck.
