Post Can anyone explain this odd happening?

When I got in to the store today i was asked if I came in after hours yesterday, because three computers in our classroom/gameroom where on. They were shut off last night but were on this morning. We tested to see if they were set to restart if the power goes off, No. The only thing different with the three that restarted that the other 5 don't have is processor number feature in cmos was on. Has anyone ever heard of this? I believe all three are PIII - 750's with Nvidia 16-32mb vid cards, sb16, and a nic. All have 128mb of PC133 sdram and 30 gb hd's. Anything else you need just ask. Is this weird or what? Oh and yes they were connected to the Lan, but we have a router and a linux box acting as firewalls.

    thanks for any ideas.

    Sure, I can explain. It's Magic. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
Seriously though, I have heard of some of my customers computers mysteriously turning on and never did find out what it was, and was never able to recreate the problem, as long as you had firewalls up and such and no Wake on Lan, I dont have an answer. Sorry

    Hi Shrad92,

I have had a similar problem, and discovered that it was wake on lan that did it.

Handy thing but not needed for my PCs

    Unhappy

This is an oddity that has bugged me for years. I dont know if SCSI has anything to do with it as my machines have always been SCSI. At home my PC is hands off to the family or they will suffer a fate worse than eating at MacDonalds for the rest of their life. In the past I had a 166 and later a 266 system that would just turn it self on. I would be in the den or in bed and all of a sudden I would hear Star Wars which was the opening sound I chose. I would start yelling to get away from my PC only to find everyone in bed or nowhere around it. I was sitting at the desk one day doing paper work and all of a sudden my PC came on. I ahve never had anyone explain why nor have I been able to explain it. My wife says My PCs are haunted! Maybe she is right. <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">

Well we have never had this happen before these three computers did it at the same time. All three were new builds with almost if not identical hardware and matching the ones we had ( except processor spd these new ones are faster ) the only other thing we found like I said was all three had the processor number function or what ever it was called turned on. Oh well Iwill let you all know if I discover anything ( I've haven't yet had time to investigate fully myself! )

On my Dell Optiplex GX110 at work there is a setting in the BIOS called Auto Power On. If enabled you can choose what time the computer will turn itself on and whether it will do it everyday or just on weekdays.

Some other reasons I have heard in other threads are wake on LAN and wake on modem.

Well i checked this out a little and still can't explain it. The computers that booted on their own did have wake on lan but so did the identical computers next to them that did not boot. Like I said the only difference is all three the booted also had Processor number function enabled. I turned that off on one of the machines and now I'm waiting to see if this happens again. I'll let you know if it repeats but so far......

I would just disable WOL unless it is really needed-- could be that the IP was pinged on the ones that turned on, and not pinged ont he ones that weren't--- I could be wrong, but if you disable WOL and it stops, you know what was causing it...

May Not pertain to your situation, but I once had a customer that had a similar problem with one pc.

Her Pc had wake on KB enabled.

After going over the security tape we discovered that a mouse (furry creature that eats cheese) ran across the kb at night. Looking for doughnut crumbs.
