I'd like to know if everybody will join and what is the url.

I'm still debating that... Driverzone? Driverguide? TheTechBoard? Anandtech? TechRepublic? I don't know.

But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

The best thing about it would be that I have so any 'resources' to call upon to get 'something' started that it frightens me to even think about it. You know what the main thing that is stopping me??? The Back Stabbers who would say that I am using [insert site name here] to build the site off.

I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to be right here. Sure the WinDrivers.com site is paid only, but the forums are free and I'm sticking around until otherwise. I still love helping people here, and even though I don't have access to the main site anymore, I can still get by, Lord willing, with a lot of other tools I've learned how to use. www.google.com is my friend!

That's what i'm saying. I'll stay here as long as they are not charging for the forums.

BUT

If (when) that changes, bu-bye WD.

Since it seems to be the general concensus, we just have to wait and see... and cross that bridge when we get there. OK.

(somehow, a little voice in my head says it will not be long )

BTW Darren, any develop. on that US project?

Thumbs down

And here I thought the bad old days were gone! Long ago before internet all we had were BBSs. There were a few free ones but most of the good ones charged a modest fee, sometimes a one time charge. They were invaluable at the time as manufactures and suppliers had not got on line. The PC field was new and drivers and tweaks were hard to come by. Everyone was searching franticly for information so we didnt mind paying a FEW bucks for a few good tech resource centers. Now we have FCC id #s,Manufacure support pages, news groups and a host of other resource areas that are free. I found the people at windrivers to be not only a knowledgable bunch but also a lot of fun and I didnt have to use geek spaek. As long as the forums are free I will hang around. Ya'll are hell of a group and have brought many a smile and laugh to this old tech. Windrivers goes with my morning pot of coffee and my afternoon 6er of MGD. Habits whether good or bad that are hard to break. $60.00 per year just to get redirected...... you have to be kidding.

I've never looked at the windrivers page longer than it takes to click on the forums link.. So no skin off my nose.
Though what it sound like it does, I can't see a lot of revinue comming from this little trick.

I will pay, for all the help I have gotten over the years...

See my justification here.

I will add the caveat that I would not feel justified paying for the forums, though.
Of the 3 questions that I have had, only one was usefully answered...
ALL the rest of my other posts have been helping others... I wouldn't feel good about having to PAY to help others...

I'll probably spend more time searching for free porn mpeg's and keep a bigger stock of lotion.

Very very ture, right on the money!

I'm just hot headed right now. I will settle down and hopefully everyone that thinks I'm outta line on my post towards the recent subscription service announcement will forgive my unsought reactions.

I don't expect I would pay, not because I object to paying for what used to be free, but mainly due to logistics, with a bit of empty pocket syndrome.

Logistics: getting funds to the U.S. is messy if you don't have an internationally recognised credit card (I don't).

Pockets: with the poor exchange rate for the $AUS, the full subscription would be half a week's income for me at the moment (only part time work - carer for aged & disabled parents). The tiny need I have for the driver source couldn't justify it, so if the forums went subscription that would stop me.

Initial reaction: H### NO!!! Second reaction: well, it's never been free, we the users have just never had to pay for it. Third reaction: if I pay, will you (internet.com) remove ALL ads from the site??? If I pay, I don't want to put up with ads, sorry. Fourth reaction: as long as duplicate sites offer equal service free, probably not. This is why I have DirectTV, so I don't have to watch commercials in order to watch what I PAID for. I don't watch commercial TV at all, but I am willing to pay for that service. Fifth reaction: Better get used to it, I hear lots of grumblings about subscription from many areas. I think this is just a bit early for this area of our normal life, but highways are not free either, we just don't have to pay up front for all the use we put on the highway system, but ultimatly we do pay, don't we??

Angry

If they ever try to subscribe this place it'll really bomb. They'll just lose the lot. None of the regulars will stay. Who's going to be giving out the advice? It just can't be worth it for anyone.

Anyway. Like i said in the last subscription thread I'll see you around. When I get a modem at home I'll visit my friends on DSB.

The address flashes up like a sore thumb on our firewall so I can't visit it from work. They'd think I was surfing man porn.

I'll miss you all a lot for a while. Adios amigo's.. PS I've subscribed over at anand see one or two of you there.
