If you're using Arctic Silver you shouldn't need to reapply very often, if at all. Other generic cheap brands, yes. Not sure about the time span but I'm guessing several months.
I usually like to do a rebuild every few months anyway...

if applied correctly there is no reason to replace the compound.
as discused previously , compound serves to fill the blemishes on the surface of the HSF ,,once this compound has worked it,s way into the blemishes then its job is done.
u don,t need to start checking it every month.
i bet u also open the fridge door to see if the light was on.

Hmm, you sure, I have heard that some cheaper compounds dry up after a while and lose some of their effectiveness. Not once a month but more like once every few months.
Maybe we need a third opinion?

Ok here is the third opinion...
Only when you remove the Heatsink.... I have never heard of going in just to change the thermal pad...

Thermal paste should last as long as the cpu ain't reseated, sometimes really crappy thermal gloop may 'dry', is this what you are on about?, in extreme cases it shrinks and cracks thus rendering it useless, if you set the temp alarms then you are gonna know that particular brand is pants & don't use it again.....

I always use Arctic Silver...what's $5 for lower temps huh
On a side note, anyone see the reviews on AS3? It's supposed to be very effective, dropped temps in review samples about 2 to 3 C <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Flabooble!
What I have seen from reading on hard ocp and other places has lead me to believe that the silicon based white goo actually does little for you at all. I have seen it dry out and have seen zero increase in temperature myself. In fact, I have seen almost zero decrease in temp from using it in the first place and do not use it at all anymore. From what I have seen in the OC forums elsewhere they all recommend using arctic silver for a slight temperature drop (maybe a few degrees).
Personally I see absolutely no reason to replace the thermal paste on a computer unless you have good reason to remove it in the first place. Due to the pressure that many heat sinks put on the motherboard and the chip itself and the difficulty in putting them on and removing them - I do not recommend removing it unless you have to. Constant removal and replacement will increase the chance of, for lack of better terms, "mess something up" (ie. You might slip and crack/slash/bend something).
Just use a good heatsink from the get go, get enough case fans to keep the airflow up and you really don’t have to worry about the paste all that much. Keep the fins on the HSF clean as well – use canned air and blow the sucker clean about every 2 months.

We had PCs running for years solid and never needed to change anything on the paste.
Imagine if you had too....
Ok take the network down I need to check the paste on the proccy ?!!?
Erm i dont think so.
However if for some reason a proccy is over heating then maybe check or certianly if you remove the heatsink then re-apply.

Never - just do it right the first time.

I've only had to re-do paste once because the shop put a LAYER of paste on....
apparently he thought this was like one of those sticky pads.. you put a layer on.. hehehheheh
Thermal paste is used to cover the imperfections in the grinding .. and I can't see where cracking would occur unless you used waaaaaaay tooooo much to begin with.
One drop should cover the entire heat sink + some!

If applied correctly you shouldn't have to replace it at all. The operative word here is "corrrectly." Older CPU's require alot of paste while newer CPU's requite just a light thin coating. Check to see your mobo instructions for the correct amount.

What's thermal grease?? LOL Just makes a mess. That's what thermal tape built onto the heat sink is for.
