    Exclamation Athlon 1G/266 and KT7A-Raid

This all started when My PIII600 blew up. So I decided to build an Athlon system. Got a TBird 1000/266, 128/PC133, and an Abit KT7A-Raid. In Softmenu III I have it set at 1000/133, memory is set at Normal and Cas = 3. VCore is running at 1.84 and I just bought a 300W PowerSupply that was on AMD List. I tried to install windows and it kept locking up. I went into SoftMenuIII and lowerd the clock speed to 1000/100fsb. It Came up at 750 and I was able to load windows. Runs like a champ until I clock it back to 1000/133. I tried loading it with only CPU, memory, and Nvidia card. (Set at 4x AGP), tried disabling that too...
I verified the processor and memory are correct. The board, CPU and memory is getting checked rigth now by the Vendor. And thoughts or ideas?

Oh Yeah, its not overheating either.

If everything checks out with the vendor the start by resetting the BIOS using the jumper on the motherboard before connecting the power cord. See what the CPU post as when U bring up the system. If this does no help might try upgrading the BIOS.

U stated that setting 1000/100 makes the CPU post at 750. What clock multiplier are U using?

What are the other componets in the system
ATA100 drives, sound cards etc. ???

    OH forgot to ask:

At what point does it crash? During the installation or after installation. What version of windows are U installing. As soon as windows is installed the next step should be to install the latest VIA 4in1 drivers. These can be found here ViaTech 4in1 Drivers

Bump up the VCore. It sounds like it may need more power.

I forgot to say this: I have a T-Bird 1Ghz/100 at home. My VCore is at 1.87, if I recall correctly. I had overheating and crashing problems before I manually adjusted it.

My brain is scattered today. Check your CPU temp. If it may be running hot, so be careful bumping VCore up. Manually adjust VCore to a setting that is close to what you think it should be. Check temps! I have a DFI baord and when it was set to auto detect VCore, it would go way up and down all the time. Once I set it manually, it was very consistent. When the VCore went up, the temp went up, etc. It really sound like the VCore isn't steadily providing power or the temps are getting too hot.

It locks up during the install. I have tried installing it with out any PCI Cards at all. I have a Wd ATA66 drive connected to Raid controler as Master. I tried disconnecting all other drives except 1 CDRom and it still crashed. I haven't tried bumping up the VCore voltage yet.. I will try that if the Vendor tells me the CPU, board, and memory checks out. I did install the operating system at 750/100. Its Win98SE. It runs like a champ at 750. I flashed the Bios already and downloaded the latest drivers as well.. I gonna try adding some led to the system via a double barrel shotgun!!! Maybe that will fix it.. hehehe

    Thanks for all your advice..

Ok, got home. VCore is 1.78. Check the reccomended VCore, and certainly check temps as AMD processors are running hot these days.

Dang am I scattered to day.....I'm having a blonde day! page 39 on Athlon processor guide shows that 1.75 is nominal voltage. If your MB has the ability to monitor the voltages, then check it out. Manually set it down some fist, unless it is manually set below 1.75. Be careful with voltages as you can fry a chip.

DO this unplug system, clear cmos.plug in and reboot, hold delete key and enter bios.

    Set clock to 7.5/133/33

set all other needed areas.NOW go to system health moniter and see what temps are,if you are 48c or higher you are too hot.ALSO allow system to remain in bios screen a while the temps will max out from being in bios.

If temps are ok,shutdown, and install os with the A drive,C,and Cdrom, and video card see if it will load windows.

You may have done all this if so go to system moniter in bios and see what temps you are getting.

I have reset the Cmos to defaults and that did not work. I have the VCore voltage set to CPU DEFAULT in the Bios. Maybe im misreading that but that tells me the voltage should be set properly. I should hear back from the Vendor somtime today regarding the results of his diagnostics. If it comes back clean, I will start to play with the voltage. I will keep you informed.

Ok heres the update, Vendor reported a flaky Motherboard. Also, it seems my modem was causing major problems. My system was not recognizing it as a modem but as a serial input device and automatically sharing an IRQ with the USB. I bought an external modem and it is now running like a champ! By the way, Never buy a Creativs Labs Modem Blaster, they suck. I am returning the one I bought an exchanging it for a USRobotics.
