Post HELP with Abit BE6 and PIII 450Mhz cpu

have purchased a retail (out of the box)
Intel 450Mhz PIII and matched it with an ABIT BE-6 motherbd... and I have PC-100 RAM
    (labeled as PC-100)

noticed that motherboard will not auto accept 450Mhz/100 cpu I get boot up error that suggests changing cpu speed and type

can get it to run at 75Mhz at 6.5 multiplier
    (ok)or 83Mhz 5.5 multiplier (with some hangs)

cpu is marked on black case as 600Mhz/100
Intel Freq ID Utility "sees" it as 600Mhz/100
    some people say I have been sold accidently a 600Mhz/100 and not a 450Mhz : )

but motherbd hangs if I use any 100
settings (right now I run it at 500Mhz/83mhz)
    and I've set L2 latency to 10
(so far is stable and will work it down)

any Abit owners there that can help me tweak
    this to speed?

any chance the cpu is a ??? defective 600Mhz?
what speed Pc-100 RAM should I have?
    so I can check?
this motherboard will not run at 100mhz
and with UDMA 33 drives and cable...

    thx

If you truly do have a PIII 600, then that Abit's be6 board's bios needs to flashed (updated) to properly recognize the PIII 600. go to www.abit-usa.com to download the latest bios version for your board. Bios flashing does have risks though and isn't covered by warranty if something goes wrong. So read the instructions from abit's website. If you aren't comfortable trying to flash, then get someone who you trust to do it or take that board back to the vendor and have them flash it. They may charge for that service though.
i remembered this because a friend of mine had a be6 board that only had cpu settings up to a PIII 550. but he updated his board with the latest revision and now his board could recognize up to a PIII 700. Even his onboard hpt366 (ultra 66 controller) was updated at the same time and he had to get the latest drivers for it as well from abit's site.

Oh yeah did that got the latest ABIT Bios (PL) dated 11-11-99

what I really need is what are the requirements to run 100Mhz

    I have a cpu (it is a 600Mhz not a 450)
    I have 2 banks of PC-100 DIMMs - 8's
I have a UDMA hard drive and 40Xcdrom UDMA
with a Syquest SPARQ (both on secondary)

system does not want to run at 100Mhz
without hanging at the start somewhere in
    Windows 98 (release 2).

do I need to up the voltage? from 2.05?
    is that customary to do?

    any reply
    thx
