    Question About Pentium 4's socket?

    Hey Everyone,
I was planning on building a computer for someone soon who like to upgrade every year or so, and I was wondering: When is Intel going to switch sockets for the P4? Because, I read somewere that when they switch, this socket will be stuck at whatever speed they leave off at with that socket. So, any ideas? Much appreciated. -Ebu

The general consensus is that the current socket format indeed dies at present speeds, i.e, 1700 MHz, with the newer socket debuting later this summer/fall at possibly 2.0 GHz.

I'd say stick with what works. When intel comes out with their new socket... talk about overpriced. The person you are speaking about doesn't seem to be to money-concious but he'll be saving a lot if you go with what's on the market now and not what will be on the market soon. Just my $.02.

Ok, but do you have an idea on how much more they will cost?
