Old server..dual 500's or 1 700
Hi everyone,
We have a old server (PII 500) that is running SBS 4.5 and all of the apps (Proxy, Exchange, SQL 7.0, RRAS/VPN, FTP) and they aren't quite ready to spring for the $$$ to buy a new server/software/licenses quite yet so I'm trying to make this thing last as long as possible. We can either put in another 500MHz processor (more expensive) or a single 700MHz. Just because of the applications the server is running, I'm leaning more towards the dual 500 configuration. Which sould I go with??
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
J.

The second CPU will probably give you more bang for your buck that just replacing a single, especially for such a small increment.
In the Distributed.net testing that I've done, my dual 450 can out-perform a single 700 by about 25%

Thanks. That was the direction I was leaning. Is this (Q124541) necessary? If so, it seems like an important step so why does none of the cert books on NT4 ever mention this? FYI, I got a question related to this topic on the Supporting NT4.0 Win2K track beta exam.
Anyway... thanks for your input.

Yep! The TID is relavent. Must do this. Adding a cpu to a system that isn't configured for Multi processor support is going to cause problems. Will work fine. Isn't the easiest thing to do but it will work just fine. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Don't even ask why they call me stressball....

Yes, you will need to upgrade the HAL. You probably currently have the halapic.dll version, you'll need the halmps.dll version.

Hey all, Thanks for the info. I'm still wondering why in blazes no cert books cover this.... I guess they just want you to check out MS KB when you try this stuff and it fails... I can understand that. Anyway, CPT Packrat you are right, I checked and I do have Halapic listed under WinNT Diagnostics. So, being this is my first time upgrading a server to multi-processors (they have all either been already, or bought that way) my next couple of questions will be posted in the WindowsNT forum.
Thank you all for the help.
