[RESOLVED] P3's Still have tracking number?
Do the newer P3's and P4's have that tracking number that was in the news so much back when the P3 first came out? What chips have that number and which ones don't?
Thanks,
Eric

As far as I am aware of the Chips still have the identification number, but most Mobo's have this option set to disabled by default in the BIOS anyware.

All the PIII chips have that option.
Darren is correct. 99% of the mobos have that option disabled by their default BIOS settings.

Guess I will be buying AMD chips from now on then. If it can be disabled by Software it can be re-enabled by software (IE Virus). Thanks for the info.

This is no large conspiracy for tracking individuals, but simply a security option/user identity safegaurd, mostly unused due to all the negative flack...wouldn't it be nice to set your online banking to only allow changes from a cpu with a certain S/N?

What about Microsoft and those damn Product Keys then? They say that we'll need an online registration when we install their future products.
I guess this would be a disadvantage about Wintel systems in the future.
Just a though off topic...
