    Exclamation processor upgrade problem

Currently own a Dell OptiPlex GX1 with a 400MHz processor (came with the system) and the latest BIOS revision (A09). Anyway, I just bought a P3/600MHz processor to upgrade to. Once I correctly remove the 400 and insert the 600, turn the power on... and nothing! not even the BIOS loads! what does this sound like? something bad? I went to Dell's support and the GX1 system I have is able to be upgraded to a max of a P3/600MHz. So what's the deal?

Is this a CU-Mine based PIII or Katmai based. There is a difference and some boards won't support the CU-Mine core, but wil the Katmai.

Post the numbers stamped on top of the CPU here and we may be able to help more.

Have you double-checked the system with the 400 MHz chip back in it to make sure everything else still works? May seem like a stupid question, but your PIII may not be the problem. I've done that sort of thing before myself...

It is Katmai based, but the problem lies in the FSB. The 600B runs at 133Mhz, and the Motherboards that Dell use in this particular one only run at 66/100Mhz.

I would try to return it for a standard 600 not 600B or 600EB.

No disrespect intended! And you're one step ahead of me then if you already double checked.

Question to the moderator: Ifthe FSB was the problem, wouldn't it simply underclock the chip to 450 MHz? I've done that before in my store! What I mean is, the system should still boot, just at a lower speed.

Thanks, this is most likely the answer then. So I'll go with the 100Mhz bus one instead of 133... which sucks, but oh well, only way to get it upgraded =)

    Not always Window Washer.

Dell use Intel branded boards which can be funny. Like having to move a jumper to enter CMOs, etc.

Im pretty sure thats just your bios recongnizing that you've changed your chip. I know that this doenst affect the computers operation at all. I wouldnt worry about it..
