Currently own a Dell OptiPlex GX1 with a 400MHz processor (came with the system) and the latest BIOS revision (A09). Anyway, I just bought a P3/600MHz processor to upgrade to. Once I correctly remove the 400 and insert the 600, turn the power on... and nothing! not even the BIOS loads! what does this sound like? something bad? I went to Dell's support and the GX1 system I have is able to be upgraded to a max of a P3/600MHz. So what's the deal?
Have you double-checked the system with the 400 MHz chip back in it to make sure everything else still works? May seem like a stupid question, but your PIII may not be the problem. I've done that sort of thing before myself...
No disrespect intended! And you're one step ahead of me then if you already double checked.
Question to the moderator: Ifthe FSB was the problem, wouldn't it simply underclock the chip to 450 MHz? I've done that before in my store! What I mean is, the system should still boot, just at a lower speed.
