Post with cd rom & cdrw, setup fails....

i'm puttin' the finishing touches on the system i built for me (finally), and am encountering an odd problem...

when i have just my burner installed on the secondary master (sony 8/4/32) no problems reading, burning, ripping, anything. when i add an additional cd rom drive (now it's a kenwood trueX 72) on the primary slave, i encounter problems with both drives... nothing at sony's site about it. i have been having similar problems with other cd roms, but thought they were garbage. it will play music cd's, but setup hangs on unreal tournament and deus ex on both drives... before i had similar problems where a pos cd rom drive would only read data cd's and my relatively new creative cdrw would only read music cd's (weird).

i will go back for the 6th time, and check all my cables, jumpers, etc.. to verify correct setup. have toggled between dma modes in bios with no success. post detects and properly id's the drives...

    any help....

    sb live! platinum 5.1
win 98se with all critical updates

on occasion, with the old cdrom and cdrw, i would get an msgsrv32 stopped responding error if it's any help..

    thanx team!

In Device Manager, try setting your IDE ATA/ATAPI controller to DMA mode instead of PIO mode for both drives. Both my Creative Labs PC-DVD and HP 9100i CD Writer are picky about that setting...

Another option is to run the cd and cdrw on seperate ide channels.

    Thumbs up

    thanx team!

it's up and running without a snag!

flashed the bios and, even though i just got the board, there was an updated driver for the ultra ata 100 controller. should've checked these things first, but it slipped my mind. was convinced i had a strange irq conflict somewhere... oh well, you RElearn something everyday!
    thanx again!
