Question Questions about how to turn my USB port on.

I just got a ZipCD USB drive and after plugging it into my computer it does not recognize its there.. if i restart it will detect new hardware and install it.. But hangs at the windows98 screen.. I have to unplug the USB port and restart again to get back into windows.

Any help about reconfiguring my USB or pointing me in the right direction would be great.

Make sure you have the most recent BIOS update for your motherboard.

What model, Processor speed, and any other info, like bios date.
You might be able to get some of this info in CMOS.

I thought that was for somthing to do with the IBM Connection setup? Kinda like what Microsoft has for Windows as an updater?

do you think that will fix my USB ports?

I talked to the guys over at Iomega and they said something about updating my "ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller" to "ALi PCI to USB Universal Host Controller"

and to do that I had to go to http://www.acerlabs.com/eng/support/driver.shtml to get some update at the bottom of the page. well after going there and reading the .txt it had on the update, it said that windows 98 already had the update and there is no need for it.

so if windows98 already has it.. what am I to do?

Tried it.. nothing.. it was only to fix my model and s/n if it was wrong.. but it was correct.

I was going to try that ALi update, but it said I need to run something from Microsoft called usbsupp.exe first then use the update.. well i dont have that file and i looked on the microsoft site for it and could not find a download..

i think what the ALi ment when they said win98 has the update already... maybe they ment win98 second edition? i believe i have the first.

it sucks.. i may have to spend $200+ to get a new copy of windows98! and i am not even sure if that will fix my problems.

    That usbsupp.exe was for Win95
It is included with 98 and 98SE

Post your problem in the Tech To Tech Forum
You have the right Operating System, There is something about the Ali chipset that is causing the USB to not work. The Tech's in that forum would probably give you enough Ideas to resolve your problem.
