USB driver won't load in W95B
After configuring more than 200 computers
this is a first for me:
AMD K62-450 .. GAINWARD 5VPA MOBO (VIA CHIPST) .. 128 MB SDRAM .. Voodoo Banshee AGP VIDEO.
I set this machine up with a SCSI HD & WIN98
and have NO problems. Not one. I then remove
all Scsi stuff (card too) and set up W95B on
a 1G IDE HD. Everything goes fine except the
USB driver which refuses to load now. There's
only W95B installed - NO hardware drivers, NO other software .. nothing. I then tried installing all the mobo drivers first but still no USB. What might cause the USB install to fail?
Thanx everyone.
Bill.

Have you loaded the USB supplement for Win95?
Windows 95B requires the supplement in order to be able to load the USB, it is either supplied on the driver disk for the motherboard or the MS supplement on the win95 CD (located under other/usb).

Yes, I loaded the supplement. On reboot,
W95B finds the USB, installs it normally,
and all looks fine. When I check device
mngr, USB has a yellow !, and the details
simply say 'Device failure , etc, etc.'

hey man. first things first. Os need to be Osr 2.1 for usb support. usb needs to be enabled in bios and you need to check what the conflict refers to under properties of the device. ( in device manager. ) You may also need to install the agp driver for the Mobo. there may be a conflict with the video card and the usb.

not to mention it also needs the Root Hub device which should have been detected with the usb device-check if it is there

Thanx for the replies. To be more specific
(again):
it's OSR2/WIN95B, USB IS enabled in the bios,
the video driver is NOT installed (so no
conflict there), and there is NO conflict
at all in Dev. Mngr.
The USB supplement was loaded first .. then reboot .. Win95 finds & installs USB & Root Hub. Device mngr then states: "device failure, etc, etc."

Hey, I've seen the same thing with some systems. Messed around with it 'til I got tired of it and upgraded to Win98 and got on with my life. If there is a reason you have to use Win95 good luck. Since you already know the port works with Win98, the hardware is apparently fine. I'm not too sure that the Win95 support was as forgiving with the proper implementation of USB as Win98 appears to be.

Thanx all. I get the drift about 95 and
USB issues. I needed 95 because my old
Epson printer's last driver is for W95
(in 1996) and they won't write another one.
At around $60, it's probably easier to
buy a new printer.
Thanx again.
Bill.

it sounds like you dont have osr2.1. You have osr2. Usb will never work or if it does it will be unstable!!! You might be better off installing Usb support for dos and win3.1.

Your Epson W95 driver should work fine in W98.

?was the USB enabled prier to installing the OS? Also you may need to update the drivers for the chipset! Also some boards will not work with Win95 USB drivers. unless i am missing the point here, and I do that often, ASK MY WIFE

Thanx for the reply. I think I may have
confused folks with my wording. Very simply,
My computer ran fine with NO problems or errors of ANY kind. Then without changing
ANY setting, I removed the HD and installed
another .. this time I loaded W95B, not 98.
While setting up all devices, I noticed that
it refused to install USB and left an error
in device mngr. I've done this job a few hundred times and never had any problems
installing the supplement and driver.
The system was TOTALLY problem free ..except
for the yellow mark in device mngr/USB.
I had NO USB devices I wanted to use ..
I just wanted to fix the error. I finally gave up and threw together an old HP P133
with all junk parts .. loaded 95B and VOILA!
No such error. (as usual)
My ? to you: Do you mean some mobos just won't accept the USB install or do you mean
they won't run at all??

I have not yet come across a mobo that had usb ports enabled on the mobo, that i could not get the usb installed(root hub too) in win95b. After installing the usb supplement, i make sure i take the usb out of device manager, where it has a question mark. when it reboots i have to tell it where to find uhscd.sys(or something like that)which is in the windows/system folder. i have also learned thru experience that if i have run my amdupdate for greater than 350mhz amd k6 processors, that the usbupp will overwrite at least part of it, so i have to reinstall amdupdate again.
i don't know if this answers your question.
