USB Mass Storage Device Driver Error
Hi,
I recently bought an external Harddrive caddy USB 2.0.
I am trying to install (plug and play I believe) and I get an error:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
I called the place where I got the caddy but they were no use at all.
anyone have any idea what could be the problem.
heres the specs:
Windows XP SP1
USB 1.1 on the computer I believe
NewMotion Hard drive caddy, USB 2.0, 3.5 Inch
Thanx in advance

Geezer
So welcome to Windrivers elogic
Most likely somethings amiss with your USB drivers for your motherboard.
Code 10 just means it hasn't got internal resources available to it (so that's 'usually' no spare or 'unshareable' IRQ or memory ranges) - so windows has found it etc but can't use it..
Do you have other usb devices to 'test' your usb port with ? In other words does it work 'just fine' with other stuff but not this ? (giving us details of either the motherboard or make & model of pc will be 'handy' )
However I've got to question the wisdom of using any usb 2.0 external drive through a usb 1 port ... it'll be soooooooooo sloooooooooow ! - an add in usb 2.0 card (a pci one can be had for $10 or so) will give you infinately (well about 10x better) performance

Hey,
thnx for your quick reply.
I actually use a USB mouse and also have USB digital cameras which always seem to work, just not this hard drive caddy.
I am not sure about the motherboard at all. It is a laptop that I bought and I do not know much about this kind of thing.
Is there some software out there that could tell me or somewhere in windows?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely both camera & mouse are usb 1, more versions of windows 'know' about them than usb 2 'out of the box', its supposed to be backward compatible .. but usually to usb 1.1.. which is fractionally different
Tell us the make & model then of your laptop .. & what version of windows too (& does that have all the patches etc) .. also can you confirm just which one of these guys products might be yours ?
FYI a PCMCIA or cardbus adapter (credit card sized 'thingees' which plug in a little slot on virtual every lappie instead of PCI cards) to do what I said above is gonna probably be in the $30+ range to get your speed boost ..

Hi, Unfortunally my laptop is custom built so I still have no idea what type of motherboard it has, I am in the process of searching for the reciept which I think the specs written on it, however after looking at the website of the company who build it (http://www.precisioncomputers.com.au/notebooks.php) It doesn't look like they list the the type of motherboard there either.
As for the Hard drive caddy: http://www.newmotiontech.com/new/pro...es/3.5alum.htm
that's the one I got, 3.5 inch with USB 2
I am using windows XP - Home With SP1, and I regularly update windows via the update feature...
Thanks

aida32 will show you the motherboard chipset is the most important I think.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

So If I get myself a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card for my laptop, then this will fix the problem?
