    Unhappy Is my cd-rw bunk?

I own a HiVal 2422 cd-rw drive that freezes my computer almost every time i try to install a program.
    I have a k6-2 300 cpu, win98, 64meg ram.
The thing freezes in random areas. The screen stops, but the cd-rw's and harddrive's led stay on (but dont blink as if there was activity, they just shine.) The only way to recover is to turn comp off, then back on.

This could be a Bus Master driver problem - are you running the VIA Bus Master drivers? Do you also have a CDROM as well as a CDRW? I had lockups on my Yamaha CDRW whenever i tried to access CDDA tracks and this was cured by removing the Bus Master drivers for the secondary IDE channel, on which the CDRW was mounted. See the Win Drivers section on Bus Mastering for info on how best to do this - worked for me!

Go to http://www.viatech.com and download the Via 4 in 1 update it includes
    IDE Busmaster (2.1.39)
    VIA AGP 3.52
    IRQ Routing Driver (1.3a)
    VIA Registry (ACPI).
    These should cure your problems.
