Lightbulb MCSE or BSc. Degree?

Just began studying at own pace while in work at the MCSE in Windows 2000. However, the though crossed my mind about getting a Degree back in University. Which involves going to college 3 night a week or at least 18 hours study per week. I would get a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology. I was thinking, what's the lifespan of the MCSE? 3 or 4 years? Then you have to upgrade, when microsoft decide to implement another platform. I don't necessarily want to give Mr. Gates more money!!

Cool

I would do a Degree, you can get a job with that anywhere. The MCSE will be obsolete within 5 years, but the degree stays for life.

Academic Qualifications are far more valuable that a cert, especially with the number of paper MCSE's out there. A prospective employer will take more notice of the B.Sc.

Well I will have my MCSE within a year while you are going to night school for 3 or 4 years (of boring, non-essential, some non-computer related homework). Every 3 or 4 years, sure I will have to retest for a new platform, but did it ever occur to the two of yutes that it is a learning experience. Learning is good, very good. You goto college, you waste some time, get your degree, and what's after that, you stop learning? I don't think so, I'll stick with the heavy weight Certs

If you can stomach it, I'd go for the degree. There's a lot to be said from employers about someone who has made the 4 trek. It'll be rough at times, but I think a degree is your best bet.

Do the Bachelors Degree. Learn how to learn throughout your life not to just pass the current MCSE tests. You will be more valuable to yourself and any perspective employers. At many Universities the computer science majors pick up certs through their four-year program. Why not come out with a degree and an MCSE? The programmer I work with picked up his MCSD while working full time in just over a year. A MCSE over four years is easily attainable. Go for it no body ever regretted reaching for more.
No need to be concerned. The voices in my head assure me I am completely sane.

Agreed! Use the MCSE to get your foot in the door and the BS to keep it there. BS degree that is. There is enough of the other kind out there.

Well, I've 5 years experience in the computer Industry as a techie. No MCSE. Foots already in the door. Think I will go with the BSc. And there's no reason why I can get the MCSE or at least pass a few MCPs, on the way there.

Like I said, read my post. I have a problem with these people saying Bachelors Degree over MCSE, are we talking real world or make-believe?

If you have the opportunity, take the BS by far!

A MCSE is nice, but only gonna take you so far. A BS is more widespread and can get you many more opportunities, than just a cert in microsoft products.

I would get the BS, then get a entry level job and then work on any certs that may be appropriate at that time.
