I maintain a friend's home recording studio. He is having a curious problem with Cool Edit Pro not recording Redbook .WAV files. Is there anyone proficient in this area who has any ideas?

Here's what happens.

Record a .WAV file, Cool Edit declares it is 44.1 KHz 16bit stereo, writing software (both Gear Audio & Roxio) says file invalid, must be 44.1K 16 bit stereo.

On about 1 file in 2, if you convert the sample type to the same specification, it comes good, but on the others it makes no difference.

I've examined the files and they are differently specified in the File Format data block.

I brought sample files home, one Redbook, one not and my Cool Edit also identifies them both as 44.1 16bit stereo, and everything behaves the same on my system as it does on his.

I can't identify any menu option that is wrongly set, and a second Cool Edit installation he put on his system does the same. The only thing he can attribute it to is doing some 48KHz recording from his DAT prior to trying to do this current CD.

Anyone got any thoughts before I go up there again & start de & re-installing?
