this is what the line in my config.sys looks like:

When I boot up my computer when it is starting everything up like sound card drivers etc., It says the line to start up my cd-rom but then below it says- Device Driver Not Found "MSCD001"

You say that you can see when the device driver is loading, but does it successfully detect your CD-ROM drive, or does it give some message like, "No driver loaded, no CD-ROM drive detected"? It looks like the syntax in your config.sys is correct, but when mscdex.exe runs from your autoexec.bat file, it is not finding the "MSCDOO1" device that should be loaded in memory. The driver is running from your config.sys, but it is apparently failing to load, possibly because it is not detecting your drive.

the message given is "no Valid cd-rom drivers selected" so what you are saying is that i probably need a new cd-rom drive?

Copy mscdex.exe to your c:
Then edit your autoexec.bat to read
C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
Then reboot your computer

Ok that worked, I'm not getting any error messages or anything. The question now is hpw do I get it to show up on the "My Computer" screen?

Does it show up in device manager?
Can you use the cdrom in Dos?
Check to see if it's using compatibilty mode in system performance.

it does not show up in device manager, dos doesnt seem to detect it, and it says my system is configured for optimal performance

If you are using Win95 or 98 you shouldn't need any DOS drivers loading from your config.sys or autoexec.bat - Windows should load its 32-bit drivers for the CD-drive and give you a drive letter.

Is your cdrom connected to an ide off the motherboard, or an ide off the sound card?
if it's from the motherboard, stevet is right, it should not need the dos drivers.
It's possible you have a bad cdrom.

When u power on your computer, does it give you a colourful screen with lots of icons or

does it give u a black screen with some words on the top of the screen?
