Resolved [RESOLVED] Network Error During Active directory installation in win2k server

    Hello,
When I try to install Active Directory on a newly istalled win2k server as a first domain controller, (using dcpromo) it gives me an error message "Operation Failed... Couln't find location on the network.."

    What could be wrong?
I can't promote the box to be the Domain cotroller.
Any help will be appreciated. IP address is set to be assigned automatically.

Give it a static IP address and try again.

Have you configured your DNS correctly?

Assigned a static ip, got the same message, "network location cannot be reached.."
DNS is supposed to get configured with Active Directory installation.

    Any other suggestions??

    isntall sp1
    install dns
    do not configure dns
    start dcpromo
do not let windows config dns
    upon reboot config dns
install support tools from win2k cd
run from a command prompt - netdiag /fix
let it run through and it is a perfect running DC.
    amazing....

that means that DNS does not have be working correctly.
you create your zones after dcpromo.

i should submit that one to MS

Did you have a network cable pluged into the system dcpromo with fail with that error message if it is not attached to a network.

doesnt matter if it is live or not...
have DNS installed (no zones) and have your primary and only DNS pointed to 127.0.0.1
(can be done by NOT putting information in for primary and secondary DNS - it will automaticly put 127.0.0.1)

obey my rules, and kneel before me...

Yes it does matter win2k will not install active directory without a network signal to its ethernet card... try it yourself

you can set any ip address (as long as it is static) and have the primary dns point to the machines loopback, and it will go.
Once i get my new server parts in - i will try it, and see what i come up with.
i never tried doing it without a network connection, just using a oddball ip address (10.0.x.x in a 192.168.x.x network)
