Well there are a few quirks with a Win 98 upgrade and this one is common.Go to the device manager, click on the cdrom and make sure that DMA is NOT checked, if it is uncheck it.I have seen this one alot with many of my customers.

just for information, the full version of Windows 98 also does the same with certain CD-ROM drives. Even with drives that are supposed to be DMA compatible.
