    Post install windows 2000 from hard disk?

    Just wondering if there's a way of installing windows 2000 direct from hard disk, similar to how you can copy the cabs files for win 95/98 to your hard disk and install from there.

    Anyone know how this can be done for windows 2000

    Yes, copy the i386 folder and run winnt from a dos prompt. You may want to run smartdrv.exe before hand which does speed the process up a little.

    whenever i tried doing it, during install I got errors. After I installed from the cd I copied the I386 folder then..

    Smartdrv
    loaded = about 3 minutes before first reboot
    not loaded = about 1hr before the first reboot.
    tip: load smartdrv before copying the files, makes it a LOT faster

    you then run winnt.exe from the i386 dir.
    If you got errors, it could be your CD, or your drive.

    i installed from my hard disc without smartdrv, took 20mins before first reboot, 5400 rpm drives - dual pentium 2
    All sorts of wonderful things in life.

    Actually now I think about it I'm certain that I tried this before and assumed that I'd screwed something up since it was taking so long lol. Remember waiting an hour and giving up (seeing as it should have been faster from HD than CD).

    Should have remember Smartdrive! oops
