PC Magazine provides decent guidance about programs that are started from within the Registry. Go here to read the details. Also, I think that sometimes older, 16-bit programs still put a "Run=" or "Load=" line in WIN.INI, but I'm not absolutely sure. As always, however, be very careful about what you delete in the Registry...

You can copy msconfig from a Win98 or WinME machine and run it in Win2k. I do it all the time. You will get error boxes about the win.ini, autoexec.bat, etc......but just ingore them and use the start up tab.

It also works in Win95 too!!!

Edit: If you don't have access to a Win98 or ME machine then you can download it here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/CornMaster/Msconfig.exe (I uploaded it for a Win95 user. It's the Win98 version)

Startup control panel by mike lin available for download from ZDNET works the same as msconfig without the mandatory reboot after changes are made. Works with W98/NT/2000
