Red face cdrw in enclosure for laptop

I have a tdk velocd (eide) in an enclosure for ide cdrom drives, with a firewire output. this plugs into my firewire pc card for my laptop. the pc card seems to work & the drive shouldn't be a problem, so i figure that the enclosure is the hang up. the enclosure instructions say that win2k should add a new drive letter right when i plug in the firewire cable. but nothing happens. also i think it is supposed to be on master, but since it is external i'm not sure. please help. i want to use this drive!
