Could try fdisk /mbr and see if it will boot completely after. This just removes the master boot record which is rebuilt on the next boot.If you have formatted and gone back to the original then I would venture a guess that the mbr is corrupt.

    Cool

Do you have any anti-virus software running, as this causes hell (I know from experience...), does it still lock up when running safe mode?

Try physically removing all the devices from the system, and see it the problem occurs, add each device in turn and see if windows is happy.

both futuretech and Geek #1 are right. those fixes work quite well, but do they really offer peace of mind? my system did the same thing and brought out a lot of rage in me. it turned out the hard drive was bad, but the fix for it was quite easy. i was so pissed at it that i ripped it off the IDE bus and chucked it at a brick wall. the poor little seagate hard drive did nothing more than make three minute thuds and lay on the ground. i reinstalled it a few days later and it booted perfectly the first time.
