Post Strange boot ups & no CD rom's

Im working on a windows 2000 professional system and the thing is really starting to piss me off... The problem is that when it boots into normal mode all teh desktop icons are missing and you cannot open explorer or controll pannel. and the cdrom and burner are non existant. booting into safe mode you get all the desctop icons back and explorer back but the cd's are still non existant. all the customer said they had done was install nero burning software. any ideas??

Calm down!!!!!!!!!!

Is the box networked?

Stand-alone?

Are there domain policies in place limiting access?

Are there local policies in place limiting access?

Are they logging on as Admin (are you?) or as restricted users?

That's where I'd start, 'cos the customer won't ever do something without telling you, will they??? It's what your paid for - mind-reading!!

Good luck!!

Calm down ??? now what fun would that be?? hehe
the machine is a stand alone unit just the average home user that is trying to become familiar with the putter... they seem to have their fingers in evrything on the putter. They know as much about a putter as i do about a jet airplane ..hehe yet after some diging around i see they have been playing with the registry and a few other no no places for a newbe... Im not that familliar with win 2000 so im trying to rely on my past experiance with windows products.. as im sitting here and the other machine has booted and i have desktop icons (no cdrom's got them disconected till i figure out whats causing this) the HD is constantly being accessed...

The older versions of Nero replace the ASPI driver with their own version, breaking the Win2k access to those devices.

Try uninstalling nero, and if that doesn't work, try installing the latest version.

Which version of Nero? Make sure it's a new one and it's compatable with Win2k... Had this happen to me before. Nero killed the system. Removing Nero should fix the problem.

Cool

by chance did you upgrade from Win9x/Me using the setup from the win2k cd, through the o/s, cause this is typical of win2k, as it doesn't detect the hardware correctly, the only solution I could find was to run setup from the cd again, booting from the cd, and robert your father brother....
