[RESOLVED] print sharing in w2k
Im having a problem with printer sharing in win2k. I have an HP printer installed on my computer running win2k pro and I have to share it with other 4 computers running win98se. i cannot even see the shared resources of my win2k unit, its always asking for password for something like IPC$ but I didn't edit any password after installing win2k. I dont know the password, how do I fix this. thanks

Have you actually shared the printer by right-clicking it and selecting/configuring share?
Have you set up user accounts for each of the Win98 workstations to match the default user accounts they boot to?

YEP! Make sure You have accounts for each person on the WIN 98 systems. (Can all be the same account) And then off you go.! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Hi All,
I am a simular problem, i have a couple of Win2k pro PC which have printers directly attached. They are shared and have the everyone permission set. They are then shared on the server (NT4) and when other users go to print to these printers they get a security error. The only way i can get them to work is if i map directly to the W2K pro PC and not go through the Server....
What am i doing wrong>???

Nothing. You can't use it like that. The print queue is controlled by the Pro boxes, nto the server. That's why you have to map the other computers to the pro boxes instead of the server. If you connect the printers directly to the server, or get a remote print manager (like an HP JetDirect box) you can install the printers on the server and then do what you want.

To simplify PitaBred's response:
"You can't Share a Share"
If you want all to use the resource, such as a printer, then connect it to the server (via network connection or parallel if you're on a small home network) and share it that way. Setup accounts for each of your clients on the Server (or domain) and Ta-Da!!
I can't understand why it won't work.
The requirements say Windows 95 or better... So I installed it on my Linux box.

Or just share it on the Pro box and enable the guest account. Then everyone can use it, and no server is needed.
