Post CD Rom works with DOS, but not in Windows

I have an odd situation with an old IDE 2xCDRom in my baby play-computer. Whilst connected as a slave on the primary IDE channel it works in DOS and Win98 quite happily. Unfortunately I recently added a second hard drive and was forced to move the CDRom onto the IDE port of the sound card.

The CDRom works fine in DOS with the relevant drivers installed, but on a dos-driverless win98se the ide PORT is detected (as a standard ide/esdi controller at 170) but it refuses to see the cdrom itself (neither registers in system properties or as a drive under my computer)

ALl attempts at redection have failed to produce the CDRom. THe only way -I- have managed to get the CDRom working under Win98SE is to leave all the DOS drivers in the config.sys and autoexec.bat folders, which works, but results in a Code 10 (drivers missing or not present) error in the system properties on the controller, and the drive using MS-DOS compatibility mode. WOrks, but isn't ideal

The Sound card is a Commodore 3d 32 wavetable, which is an ISA 16bit card based on the ATZ2316R, AZT3310 and Crystal chipsets.

Anyone have any ideas?

All right,Farkyss.
But why You couldn't use Your IDE CDROM on secondary IDE channel, saying, for example,as secondary master or slave?
And set Your second harddrive as opposite to CDROM?
Do You have another,4th,IDE device connected to the system, what You didn't tell us about?

It's my baby pc for playing dos games on that don't work on my spanky new one. It only -has- one ide channel on the mainboard, hence the need to use the ide channel on the sound card

Master and slave on the only IDE channel on the board are used for hard drives

I don't know if Windows 98 will even support an IDE controller on a sound card. Those are usually pretty proprietary, and require drivers from the manufacturer. Windows might be trying to use the default IDE controller drivers, which may not work properly.

If you have a PCI slot available, try buying a Promise controller; they are fairly cheap, and are almost certainly faster than what is on board. (DO NOT get a FasTrak controller, they do not support ATAPI!)

Hrm. Money. Really was hoping not to spend any money on this little beastie If it comes to it, i'll grab a cruddy old I/O card from a bargain bin somewhere.

It's a shame, cos I used to have an AWE32 with an IDE controller. Had drivers for it and it worked fine under both win95 and win98

Mumble

Wonder if the .inf file for the creative ide controller would work on this card? worth a try i guess

Like Captain Packrat, I would be suspicious of the IDE implementation on the sound card. Getting an old I/O card & jumpering off everything except IDE2 is a good idea. Old multi-IO cards are handy for fault-finding.

A vague possibility would be a timing fault on the ISA bus, I've had this cause odd faults on old motherboards. Or if there's an option in the bios setup to vary the ISA clock frequency, it may be set too high. Some cards don't like more than 6 MHz.

just a simple thing, did pin out your cdrom as master?you had it as slave on the primary ide and i think you have to pin as master on your sound card ide, clauded

try at youre own risk useing aztech windows drivers i know they work with 95, look at the fccid number and go to aztechs websight
and see if you have a match to there fccid numbers down load the drivers disk install
if worse comes to worse you can always uninstall them also try this
shutdown restart the confuser in msdos mode
from the comand prompt e: enter
then type in win and see what happens
or go down to a dos box and see if e:is there
im curious on what the problemo actally is
