Cdrom in a Dell Optiplex
I am trying to install a cdrom in my Dell Optiplex Gs. The unicd generic boot disc does not recognise my cdrom.
Do I need to move a jumper on the motherboard?
No joy on the Dell site.

You could also try a Win98 boot disk and choose Cdrom support. Chances are the Cdrom is not configured correctly. Is it on the primary or secondary IDE cable? If it is on the cable by itself, you should set the Cdrom jumper to Master. If it is sharing the cable with the Hard drive, the Hard drive jumper should be set to Master and the Cdrom jumper should be set to Slave.

This PC has ME installed & wont pick up the cdrom. I want to install 95 or 98 on it so I need it to boot to DOS & recognise the cdrom.
This is why I think it is a motherboard problem ie jumper.
Thanks for all your help so far. <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">

most Dells use cable select for their drives. try setting the cd-rom to cable select instead of master/slave, and try another cable.

An Optiplex Gs? If I'm not mistaken, they're Pentium 133-200s. And you're running WindowsME? You pooooooooor child. Anyway, Darren is absolutely right. These machines use cable select on all their devices, so it is very possible that you may have it setup wrong. Another thing to check is to go into the setup. It should be F10 or like control shift f10, and see if it is detected in BIOS.
Just a few ideas... <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Good old NetWare 3.11... if only modern O/Ss were made of the same stuff. Forget Windows 2000 for 99.999% uptime, this one had it ten years ago.

Sorted!
Thank you for all your help. IDE2 master & set Secondary drive 0 auto in the bios, came up as Packet Interface Device.
It works, now running Win98.
Cheers all <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
