strange problem with both my drives
this problem is strange, both drives are recognized by windows as "removeable drives" and renders my cdroms useless, i cant read cds, or burn them. everytime i load a cd it asks whether i want to format it because windows thinks its a removeable drive. how do i totally get rid of this and reinstall them as regular drives? i tried just removing them in system prop. but that didnt work, any ideas?

Did this drive ever work properly on your computer? If it did, right click on My Computer, click on properties, click on tab Device Manager, click on + in front of CD-ROM, right click on the expanded cd-rom and go to properties, click settings tab, uncheck removeable, click on apply, click OK then reboot and see what that does. Good luck.

yes these drives have worked before it just started this recently. and i tried going into drive properties but in there it still sees it as a cdrom and the removable option is greyed out, so i dont know what the deal is. isnt there a way to just totally remove both of them and have windows detect it. should i just unplug em and replug em in?

Start in safe mode, go to contral panel and remove both cd-rom drives, reboot and let windows reinstall the drives.. This should put the drives back as the should be..

well i did what you said and it didnt do the trick, so then i installed a firmware upgrade to my cdrom ( it didnt need it i jus wanted to see if it would override the problems ) so now windows sees them as cdroms now, but heres the new problem. any cd i insert in the both of the drives it says that a connected device to the system isnt functioning, but in system properties it says its working fine
this is getting ridiculous, shall i just unplug them both and start up windows then plug them back in and see if windows reinstalls the drivers?
or is there any way to actually really remove the drivers from my computer so a new hardware dialog will come up when i start windows?

Try removing the primary and secondary IDE controllers from safe mode. You may have to just remove the parent contol device that is listed. It will then redetect all IDE drive that are on that channel. Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your IDE device controller some Mobo's need specific from manufacturer ones and the one that windows installs are the best one suited.

You might not have to format just yet... Try running Win98 setup after booting from a Win98 boot disk. You'll nned to be able to access the CDROM after booting to A:, of course (which is why it's easiest to use the Win98 booter) but if you run the setup program you won't need to actually delete anything.
If you were gonna reinstall anyway, it's worth a shot since it won't do any harm. It's a really handy trick for getting around problems with vxd errors, and restoring corrput system files. Give it a try before you delete anything - you won't lose any data, and the only thanig that will change is that your desktop will be tidier And hopefully your drive problem will be a bit better......

Dunno if this would work or not, but try replacing the IDE cable with a spare one that for sure works. May not work but its what I usually do when I start running out of options.

well i just went ahead and reformatted, but now my burner just wont burn any cds even after i changed the firmware which usually would work, it freezes every program at 3 or 6% and i have to restart. this sucks, this never happened before
