Playin Dead
I have a Toshiba Satellite 4005CDS and the majority of the time when I hit the power button it doesn't boot. The power light comes on but the HDD light does nothing. Occasionally both lights come on and it begins to boot but then hangs. After several tries it finally boots up fine. This happens whether A/C is plugged in or not and doesn't matter if it's been recently used or sitting for a while. Anyone else had this problem?

my first guess would be a bad mainboard. try removing the hard drive and any extra memory first though. also, remove the battery and run it from straight a/c. i have seen faulty batterys cause problems like this in the past.

It definitely sounds hardware related, but check Toshiba's support site anyway. We have about 20 of these laptops in my company, and Toshiba has loads of tech support docs on their site. Some of them are useless, some are goldmines.

Cool, thx for the info. I've checked with Toshiba and can't seem to find anything related to this problem but I'll try a different battery.

Try removing the battery and trying again. Tha laptop sould function with the battery removed and that will eliminate the battery as the source.

It sounds like either a bad harddrive or a bad motherboard. I would try another Harddrive if possible. I am guesstimating it is the harddrive

Bummer, I certainly hope it's not that serious. I only gave 150.00 for it from one of my In-laws. I suppose I could try to accuse them of cheating me just to keep up the family relations. Anyway, thanks for the ideas guys.

try re-seating all the internals...a loose CPU or HD can cause the problems you describe

The Toshiba 4005 is similiar to my Toshiba 4010CDS (Different processor and screen) but I have upgraded my harddrive. A 20 gig will fit (12.5mm) but you will need an extender program such as MaxBlast for it to work. Mine recognized the 8 gig harddrive just fine. Toshiba tald me 8gig was the max it would recognize

Replace hard drive and see if that helps.
If not and removing the battery made no difference then open the case, completely disassembe (carefully, do not want to hurt anything) use a computer circiut contact cleaner and clean and reassemble the laptop - making sure that the fan and all connectors are nice and clean, well seated and that nothing is broken - try again - good maintanence anyhow.
