    Red face ThinkPad 760E Win95 Install Freeze

    Hi,
    Trying to install Win95 on a freshly formatted disk. When it gets to the point of detecting hardware, the screen goes blank. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    What version of Win95 are you installing? OSR2? Also try updating the bios, I've seen these types of problems be fixed by doing this. Good luck!

    I would put 98 on it, I have loaded a lot of these 760's and they run 98 real well.

    It was win95 2nd ed. I spoke to tech support at IBM, they want me to order the win95 restore CD. I tried to update the bios. There are 2 versions for this machine based on the max screen res. I chose the right one (i think) but it was a no go. I think I'll try win98 first.

    If you didn't get any error during the update, then you got the right one.

    How much memory? if you have over the base, check to see who made it. Tpads are very particular about their memory. Most common problem is with Kingston memory.

    Also, if you suspect hw, then you can do advanced diags on the hw in the bios. hold F1 while turning on and go into the test screen. Press Ctrl-A to put it into advanced mode and run a loop test. This could take a couple hours though so be prepared to let it run.

    Very true - TP laptops are picky about memory. Try removing it and installing, then either replace it, or try to run with the memory poss. bad.
