    Is it possible to hook up an external hd to a usb port on a compaq notebook (1600 series)?

    Yes it is. I believe CompUSA has external harddrives for USB and there are cases that let you put a harddrive of your own in one and use it on USB

    You should know that there are two types of USB HDD enclosures (both about $100.00) one holds a 2.5" laptop drive and is powered via the USB bus (requiring no external power) and the other is larger and uses a 3.5" hard drive powered via and external adapter.
