Post freakin annoying audio cd problem

this is a problem i haven't been able to find an answer for. i have been searching for DAYS. it's symptoms are kind of odd.

audio cds, they won't play in my cd rom drive. regular program cds work fine, but audio ones just spin and spin and spin and never play, or aren't detected. i have a mitsumi fx120t, running on windows 95. i downloaded a new updated sound driver from the manufacturer, installed it, that didn't help.

it's not a problem with any of my media players; i have a few, and they all aren't able to perform that function, and they work fine for all others. they just can't play audio cds, whether its winamp, windows media player, windows cd player, etc.

i have recently downloaded some drive diagnostic programs, and when i test an audio cd with them, THEN THEY WORK FINE. two downloaded diagnostic programs, my sound card diagnostic program, and the one included with my original cd rom driver, all get audio cds to play.

    oh, and to clarify--

i've checked anything and everything related to volume, muting, etc. unclicked and clicked and reinstalled the cd player many a time.

my cdrom drive has an audio plugin directly to my sound card.

it's not my cdrom drive; it passes all diagnostic exams. i'd really doubt it was the sound card [it said the cd interface was disabled, i enabled it =no difference].

if i just select drive e: from 'my computer' or try to run from windows media player, it just gives me the error message 'e: not accessible a device attached to the system is not functioning'.

the windows cd player recognizes how long each track is, but just flips in random order to the beginning of each one, never stopping, forever spinning.

winamp finds the correct number of tracks an audio cd has, but just lists them all as 'file not found 0:00'.

anyone know anything about audio codecs ? maybe my windows cd audio mci device is busted ?

    i'm in HELL!!!!!

From the beginning of your post I thought Codec problem Un fortunately I know next to nothing about them. So check into them. But I would Suggest trying another CDROM in your SYSTEM even though the diagnostics say its OK I would still like to try a Different CDROM (Maybe a Friends).
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

Unistall all those "Media Player" type programs and clean the registry of all of them. Then start with just reinstalling the cd-rom player from windows Work up from there adding one program at a time and triple checking after each one. You'll find the problem related to one of them. Possibly even quicktime is the culprit.

I would guess that the issue is the cd-rom. The way a cd-rom reads cds are different from format to format(audio, data, etc). The way to be sure is to yank that drive and slap it in another machine.

    thanks for all your input.

i think i'm going to go with the wildman for the time being. seems like a good idea.

yanking out my cd rom and drivin it around everywhere? ugh. maybe i'll try that, i don't know.

just curious danimal, if you don't know anything about audio codecs, why do you think that might be the problem ?

that'll probably be the next thing i play with.

i'll get back to you with the results.

I don't know much about codecs, but if you want to try reinstalling them you can remove them through the control panel>multimedia>devices. You can select individual ones or muck about with the order in which Windows tries them. If you want to remove them, you can reinstall them using Add New Hardware. Once Windows has done the autoscan thing, choose "No thanks, I'll choose my own" and select "Sound, Video and Game Controllers". There'll be a section there for Microsoft audio codecs. Any that you can't find (e.g. but used to have before you removed them) will be reinstalled once you reinstall your media player/winamp/sonique/real media etc etc etc.

It's on a bit of a "codecs" tangent, but maybe it is useful.
