I have a home built computer and have a lot of system crashes blue screen errors. The system board is an Abit bx-133raid w/a p3 750. 256k of memory that seems to be ok when tested using norton system works.I also have a voodoo5 video card,250zip,plextor px-r820 scsi 8x burner,hp 9100i ide 8x burner, ibm deskstar 20g hard drive(primary),quantum fireball ka 18g(secondary),Nic card,Windows ME. What do I need to do to correct these problems? Does any one have any suggestions?

first check device manager for any setup or driver error,Anything with a yellow check, check sys info for conflicts or resource sharing errors..How is the cpu temp? are all cards firmly seated? Dont put too much faith in Norton. Is the memory generic and how is it configure? 1 stick or different sticks? take everything out cept for video card and run the system, if stable and ok then add one more card ata time until the problem returns. Once you isolate the problem you can then find a solution <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

personally i dislike ME very much. i think that there are many errors that are deep inside it still, as a system that works flawlessly in 95B, 98, 98SE and Linux, crashes every 5 minutes in ME, with exceptions, blue screens, illegal errors, and unknown VxD errors. it may just be me, but i think that people should wait a bit until they (hopefully) bring a revised ME out.
Question of the Day: If it Micro$oft didn't exist, how much easier would our lives be?

I disagree,,,Win ME is fine as long as the person installing it follows a simple rule of thumb,,,CERTIFIED DRIVERS THAT ARE FOR WIN ME !!!FROM EACH CARD AND ASSOCERY MANUFACTURE.Without that you will cry and cry that ME is the problem when in fact it is not.

DRIVERS DRIVERS DRIVERS,To many people think ME is 98 or 98 SE,It has differences and needs different DRIVERS on many components.

Diehrd you are on the money that people need proper drivers, but don't discount the Grabble's point! M$ is famous for releasing products a year or two before they're ready. (Else why would service packs be such a big deal?) It's entirely possible that you are right, your driver point is entirely valid--but it's possible that MG is the one in the right this time as well.

I wont discount his comment However I have built many many systems,,I only install Win ME.I have had some troubles and all were related to my drivers and I mean all,,Never have I set up a new comp or installed ME on a system a few years old and had problems that could not be overcome.

So from my experence ME is an excellent platform,,Faster and some nice features.

My friend had the same problems, we replaced one stick of his ram with a new stick and bingo no more blue screens of death. So maybe you could try that.

One thing I've noticed is that Norton Systemworks itself seems to cause a lot of problems when installed on Windows ME. One bit of bad behavior I've noticed on at least three different PC's with this combo is that all system installs (driver and Windows updates, etc.) seem to slow to a crawl or hang all together. I strongly suspect Cleansweep is at fault and will even go as far to say as there may be an incompatability there. Unfortunately, unistalling Norton never fixes the problem so it must be altering certain system files upon install. Anyone else notice this kind of behavior?

The Norton program has known issues with Win Me.

Personally I would do a clean install of Me,and not load norton.

And again make sure you have the latest Me drivers for everything.

I had the same errors, until I reformatted, and reinstalled Win98SE.

I have only worked on one ME PC, factory loaded HP laptop. Issue was the Modem flaked out. After researching a little, I found an update from HP for that Modem and Sound card (integrated) and we were back in business following a reboot. I got scared at first, but found it quite refreshing to get through it without pulling any hair. With the time I spent researching, I must concur with your conclusions Diehrd. Thanks for your input.
