Audio Problems when playing games
Does anyone know why when I play games on my Compaque 5002US woth Windows ME, my sound keeps going off and on? I just put a SoundMAXII on here and it still does it.

could you post a little more information:
1) whats your computer spec is...
2) what game you're running..
3) whether there are any "warning condition !" in the hardware items section of the control panel/system utility (START,CONTROL PANEL,SYSTEM, HARDWARE)
4) what programs are running in the background (press alt-ctrl-del, once, and list all progs shown)
5) have you installed latest ME drivers for your new card?

ME can do strange things to video and audio of games but I find it is usualy due to some kind of driver the latest driver for your computer is dated the 11th April 2001 and is here

....i may be a little blind here, but because I cannot see a sound card listed, I presume its located on the mobo?
i am leaning towards a couple of things.
1) you only have 64mb ram... is this enough to play those games...?
2) if the sound is onboard it aint gonna be much of a thing! what is it actually and is that compatible.
3) maybe a silly question but is the hdd full up? (i.e. windows swap is having problems)
get back to me with some more answers.
cheers!

I talked to my brother-in-law over the weekend and he said it was my soundcard. But like you said the soundcard is part of the motherboard. I can't even find out what kind of freakin soundcard it is. Memory isn't a problem. We just got this computer about 3 months ago and I have tons of memory left. Also, these games worked just fine on my old computer which was a Packard 1995.
How do I re-install my soundcard?

well, a tip would be whip off the case lid and take a look at the motherboard. some of the chips will have writing on; you may find this will give a clue..
alternatively, i found this: http://athome.compaq.com/default.asp...&page=families
and after some searching -

Well, seems to me I thanked you too quickly. That worked for a little bit, but then it started doing it again. My brother-in-law told me I needed to remove some things from my "start-up". I tried this by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del and closing some of the programs that automatically start running when I boot up. This worked, but how do I keep them from even coming on when I boot up?
He said I really on need Explorer and my systems tray to be running.

go into start>programs> start up and delete anything from there that you do not want to start. that will take care of some of it... next step would be to try right clicking on some of the items in the sys tray and see if they have a disable function/// after that goto start>run type MSCONFIG and this will open system config. click on the start up tab and uncheck all the apps that are still running... just be careful what you are doing in there and do not uncheck anything that you wil l need for proper operation of the puter.... ok ok and then restart.... ME will tell you that you are using selective startup for trouble shooting purposes you can click on the dont show this agian if you want..... and thats all there is to it
hope it helps
