I've heard quite a few people are unimpressed with WinME in general.

Especially those that upgraded from Win9x - not a recent PC purchase.

I'm still debating whether or not to go ahead with this.

Any opinions out there ?

First ME is a very good operating system.I am on a AMD 1.2 at 1.46 never crash never freeze up.

The issues with Me are very plainly put in this post,DRIVERS<DRIVERS<DRIVERS.Funny is the fact that any O/S needs proper drivers.

Please post the system specs here,Like do you have a via chip set ??and or have you installed the chip set drivers,Also YOU MUST GET drivers that are FOR ME.98,98se drivers often do not work in ME.unless thay are listed to do so by the hardware maker.

I would say go for ME, but do it consistently the correct way.
1- reforemat your HD
2- disconnect all peripherals except for keybord, mouse and monitor (this is merely to avoid frustration)
3- install ME.
4- istall the drivers that are compatible with ME
5- before intalling anything else connect to Microsoft and let them upgrade the critical components.
6- install your applications.

You should have no problems unless you use applications that are not compatible with ME.

I upgraded to WinME from Win98se, the day ME was released. I had one little problem with the Internet connection (easily fixed) and have been running it ever since. It has a few extra bells and whistles over 98, and has been extremely stable for me. Im on my computer every nite, and have made about 1/2 dozen hardware upgrades, and too many to count installs and uninstalls of software, and ME has been flawless. Just my 2 cents.

I beg to differ. When I ran WinME, I had crashes nearly everyday. I had to reformat my hard drive twice, because of ME.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him, but he still thinks that it is the best MS product ever. I just leave him in his little dream...

Well there is certainly a lot of room for opinion when it comes to ME. Out of the dozens of systems I've installed that had clean installs of ME, I have never had a single ME related error to go back and repair. Coincidence? Perhaps. But another question I just answered in another forum just made me reconsider some of the arguments against ME. I would guess that the vast majority of problem ME installs have been performed on systems that were already running an earlier version of Windows, and based on a lot of comments I read in these forums, many of those same systems weren't always running all that great with their old versions of Windows either. Other than the obvious problem of trying to use incompatible drivers for many devices, I think that perhaps many of these systems that just can't seem to run ME might well have had some marginal RAM or other key component that just wasn't quite up to the added demands that new features in ME placed on the hardware. If you've had a bad experience with any OS, it doesn't mean that the OS is defective of deficient--just not compatible with the specific combination of HW/SW on that system.

So, the point of this soap box stand? There is plenty of room here for every experience and opinion. Just because something doesn't work for one doesn't mean it isn't the perfect solution for another. As such there is no need to insult another's opinions and choices. There are plenty of ways to warn of possible difficulties without being rude or condescending. Personally, I get real tired of all the "Windows XX is total crap" rants.

I did a clean install of ME on a drive and since have moved that hard drive through 3 different system configurations of my pleasure. With out having any where near the problems. I see and hear about from others.

I think WinMe is a good O/S, I haven't suffered any BSOD or crashes except for when I've done something I shouldn't of. I think WinMe is the most reliable WinXX O/S yet.

I didn't have any problems with ME either. Although I don't like to "upgrade" anything.. I'm a big fan of clean installs. I also like to remove all of the expansion cards and put them back in one at a time after the OS finished installing (regardless of the OS). Regarding crashing.. I've had ME crash, but I've also had 98, 98SE, NT and 2000 crash. But in my experience ME is much more stable then 98SE. But it all depends on the drivers... a lot of problems traced to bad drivers in 98 got worse in ME after "upgrading". Overall... I recommend a Win2K/ME dual boot configuration mainly because a lot of games don't appreciate Win2K "strong-hand" on resources. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Between ME and 98SE... I would go the ME way...mainly because I can leave it running for a whole day and it will still run in at the end of the day. Most of the time 98SE will just give me a blinking cursor or a frozen screen. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Whatever. I tried all I could. I swapped out every piece of hardware, even tried my new system, still, it didn't run anywhere close to stable. Win95, 98SE, and 2000 run perfectly on the same system. I know damn well that I am NOT the only one that feels this way.

He might well be but to call him so because his experience of ME is different than yours is inappropriate. Ok. Fine. You've had bad experiences with ME. That doesn't mean it's a stupid choice for someone else. It only means that you had a bad experience and others might as well....

I wasn't calling him an idiot because of his experience with ME. He is just one of those people who think that they know every little thing there is to know about computers, when I have to fix every problem he has.
